Wi!??!?! Oui!!!

I think it happened last Tuesday. Or maybe it was Wednesday? I can't remember. Matt picked me up from work and we stopped by Target on our way home to pick up something for dinner. Matt has been coveting a Wii since they came out in November (prolly before), but since we didn't pre-order, we knew it might be a long time. So after we got our foodstuffs, we made a sweep by electronics. Lo and behold there were not just one, but FOUR Wiis sitting there calmly in the electronics case under lock and key. Matt and I both did a double-take and then looked incredulously at one another. Nope. No mirage. Just four Wiis. We quickly located a Target employee and asked for two of them. See, not only did we want one, but my aunt and uncle had been searching for one for a Christmas gift for my cousin since … well before Christmas. They'd ended up giving her a WiiOweYou instead. Even more incredibly, Target gave us no hassles about purchasing two of them.

After having played this fine system and watching my six-year-old cousin beat the pants off all of us at bowling, I can fully attest to what an innovative system this is. It is entirely intuitive (in fact, I think it helps if you're a complete video game novice) and really fun to play. Owing to the fact that we're still about 70% of the way thru Final Fantasy XII, we haven't yet cracked Zelda, but we've been playing a lot of Wii Sports. Boxing and tennis are my faves, but the game is very enjoyable and my cousins seemed to find hours of play just in creating Miis (little avatar things that represent you in various games).

Trans Siberian

Last night, Matt and I had a date night. We don't do this very often unless you count making food at home and playing video games or watching Tivo together. We went to see Trans Siberian Orchestra.

In case you're not familiar with them, they largely take the classics and give them Bon Jovi stylings … lots of guitar and rock-ballady singing. They're probably something of an acquired taste. I enjoy their concerts, but Matt is the real TSO affecianado in the house. They also do scads of Christmas music which is our favorite bit.

Overall, it was a very nice concert. They had this back story that I didn't quite “get” and a few songs that just weren't to our liking, but nothing major. The worst part of the concert were the teeny tiny cramped seats at Pepsi Center … I'm five foot nothing and I felt nearly as cramped as my six-foot hubby. Awful seats. Still, it was great to be out for a night with my best guy and little one, who kept up an alternating schedule of earthquake simulations and gymnastics trials throughout the concert.

Christmas Movies

I have nothing to say today because yesterday was so utterly unremarkable and I'm so sleep deprived that even if something had happened, I wouldn't be able to remember it to tell you about it. So I'll tell you all about my favorite Christmas movies, then you can tell me about yours. Deal?

#1 A Christmas Story
Who can help but love the story of Ralphie and his crazy family? All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun, but the whole world is against him because they're afraid he'll “shoot his eye out!” Continue reading “Christmas Movies”

What's Going On

This'll be a mish-mashy sorta post. But that's OK. I'm good at that.

I've been watching Rachael Ray's new daytime TV show (Tivoed of course) … and greatly enjoying it. I've always enjoyed her food but been sorta luke-warm about her (the loud talking and excessive hand gestures, I think), but she's sort of won me over with her new show. So I'll happily recommend it to all of you. It's about 40% cooking and the rest is silly miscellaney that I find quite enjoyable.

I've gotten back into watching Martha's daytime show too. It amuses me to see her with Mr. T (she loved him in Rocky) and Andy Dick. There have been some cool segments as well. I loved the cocktail umbrella lampshades!

For some reason, Blogger seems to be malfunctioning today, so it's been hard to check up on everyone. I'll have to sneak in a read here and there.

We cooked the fishcakes last night and they were great. I'm finding a new aversion to parsley and I wasn't happy with some of the bigger pieces, but you really need it, I suppose, to make them look right and come together.

Office and Grey's Anatomy tonight. Yay!

Ramble Ramble Ramble

Well kids, I'm on a trial. It's supposed to last through next Tuesday. That's probably my only real problem with serving … blah. So far it's been kind of interesting. I have no idea why they picked me. I couldn't tell why they dismissed certain people and allowed others to remain. So that's that.

I'm in a very tired place right now because our AC is broken and it's been a bit hard to sleep with it being warm. Luckily it's cooler tonight … so hopefully I'll get some much needed rest.

Gilmore Girls was excellent tonight … I totally called the whole Lane parasite thing. And overall, it was just funny. I feel like the writers have really captrued the Stars Hollowness again which is why I liked the show in the first place. The Kirk's scene was hilarious. Veronica Mars was great too, though it left me a bit confused. I should probably go back and watch it again when I don't have to pause it every other second for Matt and Loki and phone calls.

And with that, I shall leave you.

Premier Night #1

So tonight's TV lineup contains the first premiers that I really care about … namely The Office and Grey's Anatomy. Of course, in fine serial fashion, both of these great shows left us with white-knuckle cliff-hangers (though I've only had to endure The Office's since Sunday) and I'm very keen to pick up where we left off. I'm anticipating the excellent love pentagon between Mc. Dreamy, Mc. Steamy, Mc. Vet, Addison and our heroine this evening and of course seeing what kind of hot water Izzy's gotten herself into. And possibly even more tantalizing … what is to become of Jim and Pam? Some advice for you, Pam. Marry your best friend … not some jerk who left you at a hockey game.

So tonight I will crowd the couch with Mom and Kelly and watch the stories unfold. I can't wait!

Very Official Weekend

Another busy weekend has zoomed by, very full of doings. Friday we had my parents and Kelly over for breakfast for dinner. I have a lot of great breakfast recipes, but I never seem to get around to making them because I never have time on weekdays and it always seems like we're too busy on weekends. So we requested everyone wear their jammies and had breakfast for dinner. It was quite enjoyable. After dinner we watched a few eps of The Office (American version) a show I'd never really seen a lot of … though not because I wasn't interested. Lack of time. One of the funniest shows I've seen in a long time. Continue reading “Very Official Weekend”

Shortest. Weekend. Ever.

Another weekend shot in what seemed like the blink of an eye. As always, lots to do, and just one weekend to do it in. There were few highlights from this weekend … we mainly worked around the house (reorganizing the aforementioned black-hole pantry and some other sundry tasks). We did quite a bit of cooking and movie watching, I suppose. On Friday we watched Follow that Bird and made some wontons. I'd had the recipe in the “to be tried” queue forever, and I'm glad we finally did, because it was very good. We had my mom and Kelly over for dinner on Saturday night (Cheesy Baked Chicken, Butternut Squash Rissoto, Apple Streudel) and watched Without a Paddle.

Yesterday went by in a sort of blur. We did laundry, watched some Tivo … and … ?? Matt had to leave for the airport at 6 and pack before that, so that kind of cut the day off.

Ah well … I've bored you enough. Thanks for all the sweet comments on my kitchen.

Good Weekend … but it's over

First and foremost, I wanna send a big ol' Happy Birthday to my Dad, the absolute model of everything a dad should be. Hope you have a Happy Birthday followed by a wonderful, memorable year.

The weekend was a nice one, jam-packed with activity. I saw Step Up with my mom and Kelly on Friday which was actually pretty good.

Saturday, Matt and I did errands and worked around the house. We made BBQ Chicken Tenders and Corn Fritters which both turned out really really well.

Sunday will wait 'til tomorrow …
