9 Months

Today marks 9 months of smiles, gurgles, coos and other baby sweetnesses. Where has the time gone??! I'm amazed that she's been in this big world as long as I was pregnant with her. Every day is such a fun adventure and I can really say that I'm enjoying each day a whole lot. She seems to come up with something new every day. She's got three words down-pat: hi (which is more of an “iiiii” or “haaaaa”) and mama and dada (which she uses interchangeably). She absolutely melts my heart when she puts her arms up for us to pick her up or when she gives us the super-sized grin when we walk in the room or when she snuggles into us when she's extra tired.

As far as milestones go, she's been cruising right along. She likes to pull herself up and can go from a forward bend to standing all on her own and she's finally showing a bit of interest in crawling, getting up on all fours and rocking around a bit. She loves to clap when happy and wave hi and bye to everyone. She's eating pretty much everything we eat and has found very little she doesn't like. Noodles seem to be her tip-top favorite at the moment and she loves to shove them in her mouth and slurp them up, which is absolutely hilarious.

Happy 3/4 of a year, Ms. Tabby. Your mommy and daddy love you very much!!

8 Months!

Yesterday Ms Tabby turned 8 months old. I can hardly believe she's not always been a smiling, cooing part of our family. She has had some more developmental milestones in the past month. She is probably most proud of her new-found ability to clap. She loves to do this in chorus with our cheers and applause. She doesn't make much noise yet, but it's so fun to see her imitate. She has also decided to wave hello and bye-bye once or twice, but she only does this when she feels like it. She has also started saying a few words consistently … they aren't used purposefully yet, but “dada,” “yay!” and some sort of hybrid between “hello,” “hey,” and “hi” is there too. “Mama,” of course, isn't happening yet.

We have no crawling yet and still showing limited interest in that. She will lie on her tummy and scooch for things here and there if she's good and motivated (read: when she wants to retrieve her binky), but otherwise, she wants to be sitting or standing, thank you very much. There are also no teeth visible yet. I feel like they'll come any day if her crankiness and the voracity with which she gnaws on anything that is presented to her are any indication. Ah well … I don't want her growing up too fast.

Above are a few of my favorite shots over the past week or so … she loves to play in our bed. I think it's something about the down comforter and the mountains of pillows. And that is her first taste of spaghetti (and meatballs). She ate it with great gusto and slurped down the noodles like she'd been doing it all of her life. Bottom left is her basking in the glow of my laptop (playing Toddler Keys) and on the right, she's playing with her shape sorter. Cute overload.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace

After a long, heroically fought battle, Matt's grandma, the irrepressible MamaNick, passed away early Tuesday. She was an amazing woman who I had the privelege of knowing for just a few short years. But she always impressed me as very strong, mind, body, and spirit and incredibly devoted to her family. She is survived by four sons, 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She will be missed sorely by her family and many friends.

This photo is one of the only ones we have of her with Tabby, from our first visit to Nashville after Tabby was born, back in May. It is sad that Tabby will not get a chance to get to know this very special great grandma. But we are lucky to have photos, memories, and great stories.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace, MamaNick.

Cuz He's So Cute

I just felt like putting up a photo of my Loki t'day. Just cuz he's so cute. I really don't have anything interesting to write about him. He's been busy being a dog/Tabby's favorite plaything. That dog really has the patience of a saint.

Things were pretty boring the last couple of days at our house. Matt was to be seen force-hydrating Tabby because he is all worried about her soft spot being too indented. How many other 6 mo olds out there have had Gatorade?? Yea, we're super parents. She didn't even like it that much. Prefers water … but not from her bottle. From a cup. Weird baby.

We also made enchiladas last night. That probably sounds like a perfectly awful food for someone who's just coming off tummy lurgy, but whatever. I was raise on this sorta stuff. The recipe wasn't too good though. It had almonds in the filling. I really should've stuck with my instincts and nixed those. I have this thing about texture … I like most textures, but I hate hard in the middle of not hard. Like nuts in my chocolate chip cookies. It's a bit hard to explain, but it's my “thing.” So that was kinda unfortunate. Loki liked them though. Continue reading “Cuz He's So Cute”

Six Months

Well, half a year has passed since we welcomed this sweet little person into our family and not a day goes by that she doesn't amuse, amaze, and make us a bit more awed that she's our daughter. She's an amazing blessing.

She has changed so much in the past couple of months …. weeks even. We find ourselves hardly able to keep up with her milestones. She is able to sit unassisted for brief moments now and is to be seen pulling herself onto all fours. Peaches seem to be her favorite food; she loves the purees we make and feeding herself the whole fruit in the teething feeder (basket thingy). In fact, there has hardly been a solid she doesn't love … avocado would be the notable exception.

Playtime is spent happily rolling around on the floor, trying to crawl and sit up and generally testing out her world. She babbles at length on a variety of subjects. We have no idea what these are, but it doesn't stop her from telling us allll about them. The outdoors still awes and fascinates her and is a surefire way to soothe her when she's cranky. When bedtime comes, we read stories and cuddle a bit and then she happily lays down with her froggy blanky, binky and music for the night, ready to wake up with a smile and a coo.

We are so thankful and happy she's a part of our family.

We are Family

We spent the past weekend at a family reunion in Missouri. That's where my mom's dad was born and raised and where a good deal of our family still lives. We met up in the Ozarks near the town of Warsaw, MO where two families have cabins. Most of us stayed at a nearby hotel though.

We had a great time together eating, laughing, talking, playing games, eating, swimming, tubing, reminiscing, and oh, did I mention the eating?? I swam in a lake for the first time in years. The water was so warm (it doesn't get like that here in CO … all our lakes are fed by snow melt) and nice. And there were the hugest bugs I've ever seen.

Miss Tabby was sure a hit, although it surprised me what a hit she was with the under 12 crowd, especially the little boys. She was absolutely exhausted today from all the attention and driving and now we've got to work on getting her back into her routine so we can go away again next weekend. Beaucoup photos here.

Hope everyone else had a nice weekend!

Happy Father's Day

Happy Fathers' Day to all of you wonderful fathers out there. You add a really special and unique dimension to your kids' lives. And of course, an extra special Happy Vati's Tag to my own hubby, Matt, who is an absolutely amazing father, and of course, my own dad who loves me lots and has taught me well.

We were out of town in Vail for a fun weekend with my mom, Kelly, our friends Mike & Holly and their baby, Liam. My dad was out of town fishing, so we haven't gotten a chance to have our celebration yet. sometime this week.

On the River

I had to share this with you all. A gentleman I used to work with, Richard Couillard, a friend of his, Bob, and Baloo the dog are in the midst of a two month journey down the Mississippi river on the BGB (Bob's Geriatric Barge). Richard's wife, Jessie, is getting phone updates from them and posting them to a blog for all of us to enjoy.

They've had quite the journey so far, including a period of two days without contact when Jessie sent the coast guard out looking for them! They're safe and sound – they were just out of cell range. Sounds like they're meeting lots of nice people and having a great time. Read all about it at The Mississippi Dream.

Bon Voyage, Richard, Bob, and Baloo!

Three Wonderful Months

Was there a world before she existed? Hard to believe sometimes and yet I can't believe she's already three months old!

She's growing up before our very eyes. Her head is held steady and she's working real hard on sitting up. The outdoors is her favorite place. It calms her when she needs to be calm and delights her when she's happy. And she is happy a lot. So much so that it's almost a surprise when she cries. And she has found a very amusing alternative to crying which we call “baby bitching” or “kvetching.” Basically she babbles on in a very POed tone in baby talk. It sounds like she's voicing her displeasure and listing all the things that are wrong. It's very funny. “Talking” is another thing she does a lot of. She's been vocal since birth, but her grunts have now turned into babytalk and we could spend hours listening to her and talking with her.

Besides the wonderful gift of her presence that she has given us, she is also letting us get a fairly good amount of sleep. She has slept through the night a few times now and rarely wakes more than once.

By day she is very interested in her world and stares in rapt attention at her Baby Einstein DVDs or whatever we're doing on the computer. She is also a big fan of her swing.

We count her as a blessing every day and are so thrilled to see what comes next.

Grandma’s Piano

piano_ggg

If I’m doing the math right (and I think I am), today would’ve been my grandma’s 94th birthday. As most of you know, she passed away last October. When I spoke at her funeral I talked about how she had influenced me in ways that I didn’t even realize until she was gone. One of the examples I gave was playing the piano. My grandma played the piano from childhood until near the very end. She and her twin sister rode in the wagon to take piano lessons every week when she was young. When she was older, she played with a musical group at her local community center and loved to play whatever my sister and I requested. The Entertainer and Beautiful Dreamer were some of my favorites, but she could play just about anything you set before her.

After she passed away, I inherited her piano. It has been sitting in my living room for a couple of weeks now and it makes a room that was before just there now feel complete and I can’t help but smile whenever I see it.
