We are Family

We spent the past weekend at a family reunion in Missouri. That's where my mom's dad was born and raised and where a good deal of our family still lives. We met up in the Ozarks near the town of Warsaw, MO where two families have cabins. Most of us stayed at a nearby hotel though.

We had a great time together eating, laughing, talking, playing games, eating, swimming, tubing, reminiscing, and oh, did I mention the eating?? I swam in a lake for the first time in years. The water was so warm (it doesn't get like that here in CO … all our lakes are fed by snow melt) and nice. And there were the hugest bugs I've ever seen.

Miss Tabby was sure a hit, although it surprised me what a hit she was with the under 12 crowd, especially the little boys. She was absolutely exhausted today from all the attention and driving and now we've got to work on getting her back into her routine so we can go away again next weekend. Beaucoup photos here.

Hope everyone else had a nice weekend!

Attention Customers: GO AWAY

Sometime a few months ago, the LCD cover on our camera broke off. It's not a vital part, but it's protective, so I wanted to replace it. Then when we were hiking in the river near Zapata falls, I lost the lens cap. We keep a UV filter over the lens for additional protection, so once again, not a huge deal, but I wanted to replace it.

I got online and found that the pieces themselves weren't that expensive, but that they weren't available from the same merchant, so I'd have to pay double shipping, bringing the total of two relatively cheap items well over $40. So I decided to pay a visit to Wolf Camera. Continue reading “Attention Customers: GO AWAY”

Bigboy Laptop

Ended up going home from work early yesterday. This killed me because I really need/want my vacation days (they are the same as sick days where I work) and I don't want to squander them on food poisoning. Oh well. So I went home and slept. Lots. I love sleep even when I'm not sick, but when I'm sick, sleep is even better. Anyhoo, I'm feeling way better today.

My laptop arrived yesterday. I am very excited to get it. But I didn't quite realize how big 17″ is. I don't think it will fit in my backpack. That said, it will be darn nice to play games and work with graphics on. Once I get everything sorted out.

See it came with Vista. I'm a bit opposed to Vista, cuz frankly, I think XP is grand. It's not like when we were all running 98 and it was so awful and it was nice to switch to something that worked. But anyhow, that's where it's going, so we went there with the new computer. Overall, it seems to mostly be a jazzier version of XP. But they put all your documents in weird places. Not sure what that's about. And for some reason that I haven't figured out yet, none of my fonts will load. It keeps saying their names are too long. I've got to figure out what's going on. I need those fonts. Sheesh.

Nothing Coherent Today!

I have some sort of nasty GI bug … food poisoning, methinks and I'm none too sharp at the moment. So you get the stuff that's rattling around in my brain.

I went crazy yesterday and bought Tabby this absolutely darling luggage. Cuz that's what every 5 month old needs, don'tcha know. I won't tell you how much it was, exactly, but I will tell you it was under $100 and on sale. Now I feel a bit better. It will not get here in time for the trip we're leaving on tomorrow.

Matt bought me a new laptop for my b'day which is arriving today. Hooray for that. I have found that I cannot use my stationary computer with any sort of success since Tabby was born. So now I will have a laptop that will go all over the house to wherever she needs to be. Anyhoo, since it shipped on Mon, I've been stalking it via FedEx's website. It started out in Shanghai, China (yet I still have to pay tax on it!!), then went to Anchorage, Alaska, then to Indianapolis, IN and now it's finally in Denver. It's a little sad that my consumer goods are more well traveled than I am.

Speaking of computer productivity, I actually managed to get Tabby's scrapbook started. This hurculean feat was possible only because I have decided to do this scrapbook digitally. I've always liked this idea, but have sometimes found it hard to get the pages printed as I would like them. But I googled “digital scrapbook printing” or something like that the other day and found Picaboo. Which is exactly that – a digital scrapbook service. They have laods of templates, etc. that you can use to make your own scrapbooks or you can do them up in Photoshop and import them as full pages for maxiumum control freak. I've already gotten a couple of pages done … and I didn't have to take out all of that scrapbooking stuff and make a big ol' mess. Continue reading “Nothing Coherent Today!”

Mooch this you ungrateful …

Sent out a bookmooch on Saturday. I don't normally send them first class, but it was the same $$ as media mail, so I went ahead. Got the following response yesterday evening: “This person should have mentioned that the back cover was nearly torn off, especially when I asked when requesting the book if it was in pretty good shape. But I'm happy to have the book. Thanks!”. In addition, I was not given my point, which means that I will not get a mooch in exchange for this one.

This ticks me off for a couple reasons.
1) The book was in fine condition when I sent it. So either it got damaged in shiping, or the recipient is lying in order to jip me out of my point.
2) Can I quick like explain something? THIS IS A FREE BOOK. Why the heck are you being so freakin' choosy about what condition you get it in? Can you still read it? OK then. Cuz if you're looking for some first edition collectible sort of deal, look elsewhere.

Karma. Ohm. Karma. Ohm. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Well, after all the craziness with Miss Tabby, we met up with our out of town guests, Matt's sister and her husband, Bryan, who Matt's brother, Andrew, was kind enough to pick up at the airport for us while we were finishing up with Tabby at the ER. I won't lie to you. Friday was consumed by a lot of sleep catching-up, but later that day we did manage to drive up Mount Evans. Sadly, it was pretty cloudy and we got some interesting photos but largely missed out on the spectacular views.

Saturday (my birthday!!) we visited Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory. Tabby and I sat out the tour because she wasn't allowed along and I'd been before. And we visited the Forney Museum, home of old trains and cars. Then we had dinner at Wynkoop.

Sunday we made breakfast at home and spent pretty much the entire day tubing on Clear Creek in Golden (Tabby got to visit Grandma). It is absolutely mad fun, but I got my shins (and bum) really banged up on all the rocks. I sat out the last run and stood on a bridge that goes over the creek to take photos of everyone.

Tabby: Jump! Mommy & Daddy: How high, darling?

Our little one has been going through some adjustment. She's been a bit fussier. And this reached a head last night when she screamed her little head off from midnight on (nothing would console her for more than a couple of minutes), until we finally convinced ourselves that there must be something wrong and took her to the ER.

Of course she fell asleep on the way there and made complete liars out of us within a couple of hours, doing a complete 180 and cooing and smiling at all of the doctors. Now we're laboring under the assumption that it's merely “gas” or “a GI issue” that's either resolved or getting resolved, possibly combined with a little cold she caught this week. I've never been so anxious to see a poopy diaper in all my life. We're just hoping tonight goes a lot better.

Answer #2

Ani, my favorite New Yorker and fellow foodie asks, “What is your favorite food and dessert?

Oy, Ani! That is a bit like asking which is my favorite movie or book. It is so hard to pick one!! Well I will tell you this. My favorite foods are almost always home made. Rarely can a restaurant meal compare (in my opinion anyhow) compare with a good homemade meal. The cookbook is full up with my favorite recipes.

In the spring and summer, I like cool, very fresh things. Salads, smoothies, ice cream, fruit … In the fall and winter, I like heavier dishes, soups, breads, apple desserts.

In general, I will always pick fish over steak or chicken. In desserts, I will usually pick chocolate (perferrably with peanut butter) over fruit.

Just so this answer isn't a total gip, here are a few current faves/all-time faves: Continue reading “Answer #2”
