By-Gone Days

For some reason, I'd been wanting to see the old Sesame Street short where they make crayons. I don't know how many of you remember this. My sister certainly does, but friends even just a few years older than me don't seem to recall it at all and my husband (we're about 3 months apart in age) only “vaguely” remembers it. So I did a search for it last night and was delighted to find that someone had placed it on You Tube for me to enjoy. Talk about good memories.

They also have my #2 favorite for Sesame Street shorts … Pinball 12. Genius!!

Warning: Blubber Alert

My Mother in Law got me a wonderful book for my birthday last year: Marley and Me by John Grogan. I read it almost immediately and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, as it was getting towards the end of the book, I could see where it was going .. directly to Marley's eventual demise and I couldn't read it. So recently, Matt started reading it to me again and I was enjoying the story all over. So last Friday, after we got home from dinner, Matt went to play video games. I wasn't in the mood for computering, so I laid down to read some magazines, but they didn't hold my interest. So I picked up Marley and Me and read it from where Matt and I had left off … and this time, I finished it. Sure enough … I spent the last 20 or 30 minutes (the last two chapters), crying like a baby. After I finished, still blubbering, I went downstairs to find Loki and give him a big hug.

Happy and sad, Marley and Me is a wonderful book … anyone who has ever loved a dog simply must read it. The tears are worth it. Honest.

Who Needs Sleep?

Usually, I'm a champion sleeper. World class. I get into bed, I fall asleep and I sleep straight through the night. Rarely do I dream (or that I remember anyhow). It's nice. Lately, though, sleep has been a bit tricky for me and I'm not really enjoying it. I woke up at 2:30 last night. Tossed. Turned. Listened to a book on tape (Girl of the Limberlost, in case you're curious) for over an hour. Nothing worked. So I found myself playing my new favorite video game, Lost in Blue around 4 AM this morning. I think Loki thought I was insane. He would open one eye, look over at me, kind of exasparated and go back to sleep. Lucky dog. Finally, around 5:30, I drifted off to sleep. Gues what time my alarm was set for? Yep. 6 Continue reading “Who Needs Sleep?”

Arrrrr … It Be a Fine Weekend

Friday we had my company picnic which is always a good time. Beer and brats, you know. Saturday, went to our neighborhood garage sale with friends who have babies or are about to have babies … my neighborhood is FULL of rugrats, so practically every sale has a ton of kids stuff. Didn't buy anything for me, but the kiddos got good stuff. Followed that up with lunch with Matt's bro, errands, and loads of housework.

Sun morning, we snuck in a trip to the theatre and saw Pirates, which I found to be immensely enjoyable. Johnny Depp is superb in his role and the rest of the cast was great too. We didn't anticipate that being so long, so we had to rush to get up to my aunt and uncle's house to celebrate my cousin's 13th b'day. After that, back home and s'more laundry and housework and to bed.

Beef Wellington

We had a lovely birthday dinner for my lil sis at Briarwood last night. It's a very interesting restaurant … seems to be sort of stuck in time, but in a good way. I had beef wellington for dinner, which, coincidentally is the latest thing they screwed up attempted on Control-Alt-Chicken. I think that they probably need a consultant to clue them in on a few things … for example … do not substitute pie crust for puff pastry. Ditto sausage for liver. They aren't even close to equivalent.

Summer Time TV

I'm happy to see that summer TV is looking up this year. Before now, it seems it was mostly some crappy sappy stuff on the WB and re-runs. But with all the competition for air time, we're getting more and more decent TV during the summer… Both Stargates are coming back to Sci Fi on the 14th for their 3rd and 10th seasons. Monk, one of USA's original shows, is back with new eps this summer as well and they are adding Psych, a show about a guy with a photographic memory which he uses to fake being a psychic police consultant. Treasure Hunters on NBC is an amazing race sort of reality show that has pretty good potential … teams of three, including ex-CIA, airforce (my faves for the win), the geniuses, Miss USA (surprisingly competitive), and the Wild Hanlons (rednecks … love 'em) … have to break clues and follow a path to x-marks-the-spot to get their treasure. It's been pretty interesting so far. What're your summer TV picks?

Doing Our Part

Well we certainly did our part this weekend to revive Hollywood's crummy box office receipts as of late. We saw Devil Wears Prada on Saturday evening and Superman Returns on the 4th. I greatly enjoyed DWP … it was fun and well-done with good characters and a good story. Superman Returns on the other hand … I dunno … I just didn't really dig it. I thought it was cheesy in an unintentional way and that it needed some major editing. Continue reading “Doing Our Part”

Another Weekend Shot!

We had a very nice and busy weekend. I was in the field all day Friday working on some file storage issues, so my Friday went very quickly. Friday evening, we went to dinner for my mom's birthday. We went to the Melting Pot in Louisville, CO. If you've never been to one before, I really do recommend them. My favorite bits are the cheese fondue appetizer and the chocolate dessert fondue…. mmmm. The atmosphere is nice as well; you're usually off on your own and you can talk easily. This particular Melting Pot was in a mine themed building (possibly a 70s remnant?) that they'd over-hauled. A very nice evening. Continue reading “Another Weekend Shot!”

Brain Age

I'd been hearing loads about this game, Brain Age that they made for the Nintendo DS. It's sort of like a personal trainer for your mind. It takes you thru a series of tests to determine your “brain age.” You do things like simple math at rapid speed, memorize words and regurgitate them, and some other tricky stuff. My initial age is 35, which from what I hear is pretty decent, despite that it should be around 25. It also has a built-in Sudoku game … highly recommended fun, really uses the power of the DS. Nintendo is turning out sooo much cool stuff these days. I can't wait for the Wii.
