2010 in Review: Visual Media

I doubt it will surprise you, but I didn't play a lot of games or see a lot of movies or TV in 2010 … at least not compared with other years of my existence. I spent most of my time working and being with my family. But I fit some in here and there.

Favorite Movie Seen in a Theatre: I can probably count on one hand the movies I saw in the theatre, but I absolutely LOVED Tangled!!
Favorite Movie Rented from Netflix: Outsourced … now coincidentally one of my favorite TV shows
Favorite TV Show: Big Bang Theory has made me laugh a LOT this year … it's truly inspired.
Treadmill Favorite: Biggest Loser, duh.
Favorite Kids' Show: *blink* *crickets* *blink*
Guilty Pleasure: Teen Mom (*hanging head in shame*)
Favorite Show I Watch with Matt: Top Chef! … though I wasn't a big fan of the pastry series …
Show I Gave Up On: Gossip Girl … don't know what's going on there, don't care
Fave Full Video Game: toss up between Civ V and Sims 3
Fave Casual Video Game: Farm Frenzy Farm Frenzy Farm Frenzy!!!
Fave Console Game: EA Active
Looking Forward to Next Year: well Matt just got a PS3, so I want to check out some of the Karaoke options available with Rock Band … I also can't wait to take Ben to his first movie, presumably Cars 2!!

2010 in Review: Books

I set myself a goal to read 52 books (one book per week) for the whole of 2010. I honestly had no idea if I could do it or not. I rely on audio books for my reading. I listen to them on my commute as well as when I’m doing tedious sort of work at the office and when I’m falling asleep at night. But, surprisingly, it was a very easy goal to accomplish. As of today, I’ve finished 62 books and I think I’ll easily finish 2 or 3 more before the end of the year.

I really enjoyed almost every book I picked up, with one or two exceptions. Most of the books I read were light and fluffy with happy endings, but a couple were more thinking and I enjoyed them very much as well.

Favorite Fiction Book: Cutting for Stone … this was an amazing story and really really well written
Favorite Non Fiction Book I LOVED Born to Run. It tackled everything from history to anthropology and was a really stellar read.
Favorite Author: Susan Elizabeth Philips – I read 16 books of hers this year and greatly enjoyed every single one; JD Robb/Nora Roberts was a close second – I read 15 of her books.
Most Overrated Book: People LOVED Liar, but it just irritated me.
Book I couldn’t Finish: I barely made it a quarter for the way through A Reliable Wife … it was dark, cold, depressing and the big “surprise” I saw coming from a mile away.
Most Anticipated Book: toss up between Happy Ever After, the last book of The Bride Quartet, and Mockingjay, the last book of the Hunger Games Trilogy. I LOVED both of them.

I definitely plan to keep reading at this pace next year. There are so many great books out there!!

I've really been enjoying all that the blog, How Does She? has to offer. They have fun crafts and home-keeping advice all the time. And none of it is too complicated or expensive.

I bought 4 of these cute no-slip (no joke!) headbands for running from JWG Creations. They are a great value … like half of what you can buy SweatyBands for at a running expo. And they have way better ribbon choices.

We replaced our body wash with this super yummy-smelling all natural stuff by Jason. Everyone in the house loves it and it was a big bottle for not too much $$.

Watching
I am sad to see my summer favorites, Make it or Break It, Burn Notice, and Royal Pains go into hiatus, but that means that fall TV is back!

Biggest Loser is shaping up to be a good season an I'm also enjoying Top Chef: Just Desserts as well as my standy-by faves, Chuck, The Office, Modern Family and Bones.

I have also introduced the kids to Wallace and Grommit via the miracle that is Netflix Streaming. We have been watching their three tales a lot lately. Tabby is a HUGE fan. Continue reading “Digging, Watching, Reading”

I need tell you guys all about our fab weekend and show you photos, but the camera is broken (not so broken we can’t use it, just broken enough to make getting photos off of it a pain in the bum!), so it will have to wait until tonight. Until then …

I just got an evite for a baby shower (that we sadly cannot attend!) from Paperless Post. It is a really pretty alternative to evite. I haven’t had much of a chance to check it out, but it seems really cool. It seems like the perfect melding of e-invite and PRETTY.

My Silhouette is fabulous, you guys! I have only had about 2 hours total to play with it, but I think I’m in love. It can do tons of cool stuff and I know I’ve just barely scratched the surface of its potential. Gratuitous lovey dovey post to follow.

My Walkstation is working beautifully. I have yet to watch TV on it while running, but I have had a few very successful sessions of walking + computing. I can only trudge along at about 1.5 MPH, but it is enough. Now I want one for my office.

Watching
I have really not been watching much TV. It’s been busy and I’ve been running outside more often, plus we’re still suffering the ill-effects of BLITZEN, i.e. no Wii for Netflix streaming.

But I did pick up one new show, Work of Art. It’s like Top Chef for artists. They’ve already killed off my least favorite artists, so it’s gotten even better.

I also hear Make it or Break It is back and I cannot wait to get back to my catty gymnastics FUN. Also, it has excellent music for running.

Royal Pains, a fave from last summer is back, too. I love this show because it’s like House meets MacGyver with some gorgeous scenery thrown in. Burn Notice, another USA favorite is back as well, though I am behind on it and need to catch up.

And of course, our perennial favorite, Top Chef, is back for a new season. No one has really won me over yet. I guess I’m currently pulling for Kelly, who’s from Vail, CO. She seems pretty talented. Continue reading “Digging, Watching, Reading”

Check out this super-cute mug I got at CostPlus! It looks like a take-away, but it’s really stoneware and the lid/cozy are rubbery like a cellphone cover (kind of like this one, but I didn’t have to buy two). It is perfect for my morning cup (or two) of mint green tea.

I saw an avocado pendant featured on The Kitchn. I went to check it out and immediately fell in love with all her jewelry. It’s only a matter of time, my pretties!

I saw these super cute name labels called Name Bubbles somewhere in my travels. I’m really tempted to order some for Tabby since she is starting daycamp today and needs all of her stuff (swimsuit, towels) labeled. I know sharpie eventually fades …

Watching
Since Blitzen took out my Tivo, I have not been watching much. But before that, I wasn’t watching a whole lot of TV either because it’s SUMMER, yo.

I did watch Losing it with Jillian 2x. I’m a sucker for all things Jillian and I really enjoyed the show, that is when I wasn’t wanting to punch people for being whiny and lazy (I’m mean like that).

I also watched a cute movie, Like Stars on Earth about a little kid living in India. He is a trouble-maker and getting terrible grades, but then he meets a special teacher who changes his future. It’s a bit slow to get going and the story is peppered with musical sequences some of which I loved and others I found irritating. But the story is heart warming and it was fun.

We saw SATC2 for my mom’s birthday. It was a funny movie and I didn’t check my watch nearly as often as I did during Iron Man 2. Nothing deep, for sure and it was kind of like a long episode, but I enjoyed it. The Miranda/Charlotte mommy guilt scene was priceless! Continue reading “Digging, Watching, Reading”

Have you guys seen Groupon yet? I think I'm the last one at that party, but just in case. It's a social deals site where local businesses offer goods and services at a DEEP discount. Today for Denver, they had three portrait sessions and prints for 87% off. They didn't give high-res originals, though, so I didn't bite. Worth a look though.

I also found these cute paperclip tabs at Target yesterday. I only wish they were erasable! Oh well.

Watching
Biggest Loser is over (waaaaah!). I was pleased at the outcome and hope the winner can keep the weight off long-term. It was a really good season. I look forward to it coming back in the fall. Luckily, Losing It with Jillian is on starting NEXT WEEK. She's shaping up flabby families across the country. Sounds like fun.

We went to see Iron Man 2 a couple of weeks ago. I've got to say … meh. RDJ is nice to look at and all, but it was long. And the theatre was cold. And really, I prefer my movies AT HOME. Where I can pause. And run use the bathroom and such. Plus, $20 for both of us??? Seriously?? That's over 2 months of Netflix service or 10 eps of Chuck!! But I will be going to see SATC2 with my mom and sister. Continue reading “Digging, Watching, Reading”

I can't believe it's been March since I wrote one of these posts. Where the heck did April go?? Oh RIGHT … mommying, training, working. Anyhoo …

Digging
So with all the training, I've found a couple of sites I really love. Sporty Pal is great because it hooks up with your phone and tracks your runs via GPS. It would be perfect if it was just a wee bit more accurate (it tracked me as being in Macon, GA during part of the half and said I ran like 300 + miles at a pace of 173 MPH). I also love MapMyRun, which has you plot your course on a map to tell you how far you've been. You can share your routes, etc. Though I think my fave is DailyMile which is sort of like Facebook for athletic pursuits. It also has a run-mapping feature that's cool. All of the above also sync-up with Facebook.

Watching
My new Tivo is so cool! I love the dual-tuner thing (records 2 at once), but my favorite thing by far is the Netflix and Amazon streaming!!! We got S3 of Chuck from Amazon and I've watched a few movies as well (I usually eschew movies since I can hardly ever sit down for 2 hours straight and then I forget about them). I finally watched Food, Inc. – good, thought provoking, though clearly had an agenda. I also really enjoyed Outsourced, a movie about a guy whose company decides to outsource their customer service to India and he has to go there and train the personnel. It's funny and sweet. Netflix has also brought Inspector Gadget to our home and Tabby and I are both very grateful. Continue reading “Digging, Watching, Reading”

What I'm Digging
I picked up a big box of Tasty Bite brand Madras Lentils from Costco a while back after having a very tasty sample. It's basically lentil soup in an airtight pouch that does not even need refrigeration – reheating is optional as well, though recommended. The ingredient list is short (and entirely pronounceable), the nutritional data is sound, it's filling and TASTY. I was super-excited when I noticed that there's over 20 varieties of Indian food for me to try. Excellent to have in my desk when the unexpected happens or at night when Matt's gone and I don't feel like cooking … though I doubt it will be replacing my beloved Yak & Yeti.

Remember the Milk (RTM) has become my go-to task list organizer. It has a component for the Vista sidebar as well as apps for other flavors of windows and Mac's OsX and also integrates with my Android phone using a program called Astrid. You can also add to your lists via email, which makes it very easy to keep up a honey-do list.

I just got a few new fun spring pieces at Old Navy and I've got my eye on a few more, plus some for Tabby and maybe Matt (Ben doesn't fit the Old Navy so well). I also just learned (a day too late, since a lot of the stuff I want is on clearance and probably won't have the right sizes if I wait) that every Tuesday, you get 10% off with your Old Navy card … you can also currently use “THANKYOU” to get $10 off and as usual, “MYCARD” for free shipping. The Latest and Greatest

What I'm Digging
I am looking forward to summer!!! I get a catalog from Athleta or Title 9 on a weekly basis (or so it seems) and I'm drooling over the cute/sporty sundresses. The clothing aisles at Target are drool-worth too.

I am also perusing the Seed Savers catalog. I really doubt I'll have time to grow my own seedlings from seeds and will probably hit the nursery again for starters, but a girl can dream, right? Looks like it's time to pull out Animal Vegetable Miracle again!

What I'm Watching
We finished up Big Love Season 2 before it was due back at the library (w00t!). I really enjoyed the family dramas and the intrigue with the fundamentalists. The one thing that I think is pretty odd though is their secrecy within the family. Honestly, I would do a doubletake if I met someone with two wives (or husbands), but I wouldn't stop shopping at their stores or ostracize them. I think it would fascinate me. Am I in the minority on this? Polygamy itself doesn't offend me, it's the other terrible things that tend to go hand-in-hand with it (abuse and neglect, welfare fraud, etc.). Just sayin …

We also just picked up Samantha Who from the library and have watched about 4 episodes. It is cute and entertaining, though I am a bit skeptical that it can hold my interest long-term. Also got Season 2 of Chuck … as I have not yet watched Season 1, this is less useful that it might otherwise be.

My new favorite show for running is Biggest Loser. It's very motivating. If the 300+ lb. people on there can do these challenges, then surely I can finish my 6 mi. run without too much whining, right? But every time I watch it I am grateful for my Tivo. 2 hours long, tons of commercials and also break downs and interminable weigh-ins and discussions on who's getting kicked off. I can whittle the whole thing down to around 80 minutes. God Bless you, Tivo. Continue reading “The Latest and Greatest”
