Jess's Holiday Gift Giving Guide Part 5

Today we'll cover a species with which I am most familiar: Geeks. ThinkGeek is the logical place for all your geeky shopping, but I may have a few surprises.

Geeks

What geek wouldn't love a good distraction. This little aquarium plugs into your USB port for power and you get to watch little fishies swim around. It also makes an excellent night light with soothing blue glow. Water not included. $12 @ ThinkGeek.

Settlers of Catan seems to be the analog version of Civilization (sorta). This game, for 3-4 people, is an island which you must develop into your own paradise. It takes just 15 minutes to learn, but the tiles that make the board are re arrangeable, so you can have a different game each time.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1 (the look-back address, or home, for computers). All geeks need some geeky t'shirts to go to LAN parties in, and ThinkGeek has them in spades. This one is a favorite, but I also like 2+2=5 (for particularly large values of 2), and the Geek in Training shirt for kiddies.

No geek's collection is complete without the quintessential geek movie, Office Space, mmkay? This special edition, for $14 on Amazon, features a retrospective with creator Mike Judge, deleted scenes, and … the theatrical trailer. Plus, the box has flair! How can you lose?

These abusive stamps are excellent for most office workers, geek or not. You can tell your co-workers what you really think of their documents. A variety of phrases are available (File under T for trash, and complete and utter BS) and each comes with its own (red, obviously) stamp pad. $8 at ThinkGeek.

Is your geek always late? Well maybe this circuit board clock will help him/her out! These cool clocks are made from recycled circuit boards and come with a stand for desktop use or can be hung on your nearest cubicle wall. $18 at UncommonGoods.

So maybe the circuit board clock just isn't quite right for your geek. Maybe he/she's would like this water-powered clock. It can actually run on soda or coffee or any electrolytic fluid, but we fear flowers may not fare as well in coffee. Displays date and time on a large digital display. $13 from ThinkGeek.

Most any geek would love a boxed-set of his favorite sci-fi TV show (if he hasn't already downloaded it off bittorrent, or even if he has). Ranging in price from $25 – $100 for a season. Some good geek choices include: Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Gallactica, Babylon 5, anything bearing the words Star, Trek, The Simpsons, South Park and Firefly. Your geek will thank you.

Spoil your geek and he'll never be battery-less again. This clever bag has three solar panels to allow you to harness the power of the sun to power all your favorite devices. Comes with all of the adapters you'd ever need (theoretically). Just add sun. $229 @ RedEvnvelope.

Until you train Fido to sniff out a wayward WiFi signal, you'll have to make do with this WiFi hotspotter. This gadget will detect and give you valuable information on the WiFi signals in your area. It has a large LCD display which gives you all the pertinents including network type, encryption, security status, frequency range, SSID, and signal strength and availability. $60 from ThinkGeek. A less thorough model is also available for $30.

  1. I personally love the stamps but for my geek, I'd have to go with the binary people shirt. The funny thing is that I understand that shirt. It's running off!
