A Day in the Life

05:35 I wake up after just a single tap of the snooze button. I’m trying reaaaaallly hard to ween myself off of it. It’s not uncommonly early for me, but it is early for a morning on which I’m not going to the gym.

I immediately hit the shower, rushing through it just a little to make up for those 5 miutes. I dress in our closet in the clothes I laid out the night before – a light blue blouse and dark, more formally cut jeans plus black pumps with a slight heel. I love our closet – it’s so clean and efficient.

I do my hair and put on the scant makeup I wear when heading to work then head downstairs.

05:55 I turn on the kettle and gather my work things as it warms up and then I make my tea and head to the car, weighed down with bags.

06:00 I head to work. It’s a gorgeous misty morning with rain and whispy clouds around the foothills. The best thing about going in early is the lack of traffic!!

06:30 Meeting #1 – I am working with an interview team getting ready to head out on the second interview of the week (it’s been busy!). I provide handouts, give feedback on run-throughs and hone our powerpoint deck. It is fun work and I enjoy the teams I work with.

08:00 After the meeting finishes, I spend most of the rest of the morning playing catch up, working on things that I’ve been neglecting over the past week as we did interviews: culling email, coding invoices, answering questions, scheduling follow-ups and a few smaller projects.

11:30 I pause, without really stopping work to have my lunch (sweet potato lasagna). I want to give it time to digest before I head off to my workout.

13:00 I leave the office and head to Orange Theory. I would usually have gone to the 6:05 am class, but I had to skip it for my meeting, so I’m making it up now. I would usually make it up anyhow, but since it’s Mayhem (a specific week where if you get 4/6 workouts in, you get some cool swag), I definitely won’t miss.

13:15 I arrive at OTF and change and wait for the 1:30 class to start.

14:30 The class is brutal, but I am happy to be moving my body, burning calories and sweating good. I head for home.

14:45 I arrive home about the same time as the kids do. Cocoa rapturously greets everyone. I remind Tabby about her orthodontist appointment (she’s not happy) and spend the next 25 minutes answering emails.

15:10 Tabby and I head to the orthodontist.

15:30 We arrive at the orthodontist. I send Tabby in on her own with instructions to call if she needs me. I pull out my laptop and work on a work project.

16:00 Tabby’s appointment ends, just as I’m dialing in for a conference call to discuss the interview we had earlier in the day. The team shares good insights and things to remember for later.

16:20 We arrive home and I take the last few minutes of the call in the garage then I head inside and type up and send out the notes from the meeting. I finish up the day by consulting my calendar and to do list in anticipation of the following day.

17:00 I head into the kitchen and start figuring out about dinner. I toss some beets into the pressure cooker and Matt, who has come upstairs for a while, starts the oven. I toss some baby carrots in olive oil, salt & pepper and herbs and we put them in to roast them with a pre-seasoned tri-tip steak from Costco.

17:15 While the food cooks, Matt and I discuss possible logistics for vacations in 2020. We’ll both be turning 40 so we’d like to do a fun trip. With the kids? With friends? We look at Costa Rica & Cuba and hum and ho over pros & cons. I chop and season the cooked beets and we both have some wine.

18:15 Dinner is done and the whole family gathers at the table. Tabby doesn’t like the steak, but Ben does. They both eat the carrots and ignore the beets. We have a great conversation about travel and where they’d like to go in the future. They both rate Disney as being high on the list. They enjoy cruises as well. Tabby wants to go everywhere international.

18:45 I help Ben with a card for his teacher using the plastic bag watercolor method. Then I ask him to write in it and both kids to clean up the kitchen.

19:10 Matt and I head out on a walk around the neighborhood. It’s still chilly and rainy so we don’t last a super long time, but it’s still nice to get out and take in some fresh air.

19:50 Matt and I get home to find that the kitchen is still a mess and we call the kids to fix it. We work with them a bit and get everything set for the following day.

20:05 Kids head up to reading time and Matt and I sit down to watch TV. We have just two episodes of Big Bang Theory left. As I don’t have a big pile of work to do and neither does Matt, we just get to snuggle on the couch, which is awesome for a change.

21:45 I am exhausted and head up to bed. I “wash” my face with tea tree oil pads from TJ’s, put some serum on my face and brush my teeth. I briefly consider lining up a workout for the next day, but I skip it, knowing I have to be in pretty early anyhow and Thursday is usually an off day for me. I check just a couple of things on my phone, including making a short list about things I’m grateful for in the day. Sleep comes quickly.
