12 Month Checkup

We finally got Tabby in for her 12 mo checkup on Wednesday. They had plenty of appointments (they always do), but between her party and having friends in town, etc. we chose to put it off because she *always* gets sick when she has a checkup.

Her checkup was fine. She's right on track for everything and weighing in at 19 lbs, 2 oz and she's 28 1/2 inches tall, putting her at 22nd percentile for both height and weight. She was supposed to get 4 shots, but since we have a history of autism in our family I wanted to space them out a bit and not overload her little system. For the record, I have no idea if any of that makes a difference, but I figured it couldn't hurt. She also totally won over her doctor by asking to be held by her (i.e. putting her arms out to her). Apparently pediatricians don't get this much… go figure.

So the appointment was fine, and she had her preventative tylenol, but like clockwork, she got sick that evening. She was fussy when she went to bed and then woke up in the middle of the night and could not be consoled. We brought her to bed with us and she proceeded to throw up all over us … and the bed … twice. We changed the sheets and our clothes and tried to go back to sleep. She ended up in her pack 'n' play in our room and was restless all night. Yesterday we kept her home. She was feverish, sleepy and very clingy and fussy. She seemed to be improving last night though. We'll hope for a better day today.

  1. Oh my goodness, sounds like a rough night for all of you. I can't get over how much their little bodies are expected to handle with all those vaccinations. We had to get SIX at his last visit. Last time I got a shot, I could barely handle the effects of one.

We have a history of autism in our family too. I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach every time we go to the doctor. Sounds like we won't have to get any more shots until he is 12 months though. (is that right?)

Hope Tabby starts feeling better soon!!

  2. Glad the check up went well sorry to hear about the after effect though. Poor little darling and you guys. Cute photo as always.

That is a very smart idea about stretching out the multiple shots. Do most insurances allow that? I heard that they don't because it's more cost effective do them in one batch. Too heck with that I say. I am so glad your ped's office didn't have a problem with that.

  3. That stinks that poor little Tabby gets sick every time she's given her shots. Vaccinations have changed a lot over the past few years, in a good way, but I completely understand your apprehension if you have autism in your family.

  4. Aww! Poor Tabby! Glad to hear that she is feeing better now though (read post above)! Oliver that I babysit always is sick after his well child appointments also. It lasts for a while though. Especially this nasty runny nose. Hmm….
