We’re on Lake Time

DSC_6079

We got out of town Thursday night and headed Jackson Lake. It’s a nice state park about 90 minutes from our house. It’s also in the opposite way from most of the traffic, so it really is 90 minutes.

DSC_5825Though much of it lacks shade, we got a great loop to setup on and had decent shade. The first night, we setup, got the kids to bed and did some camp fire hanging.

Friday was the beach day. I got to paddle board …

DSC_5991and the kids got to swim.

DSC_5837I’d say they had a pretty good time (this might be my new favorite pic of Ben – look at those freckles!!) …

DSC_6103… even this big girl who’s getting way too sassy.;)

DSC_5821… and especially this old man dog, who got naps and shade and pets and walks and illicit foodstuffs and a dip in the lake.

Cholula Chihuly X2

1It was truly a great weekend – fall’s last hurrah! We had many wonderful adventures – riding our bikes to the movie theatre to see Big Hero 6, cooking up some delicious food in the kitchen, cleaning out some messy corners and, in my case, heading to Denver’s Botanic Garden not just once but twice to see the Chihuly exhibit.

3

Friday evening I went with my girlfriends to see the exhibit at night. The glass, expertly illuminated was gorgeous. And as always, it was wonderful to hang with some of my best friends.

4The weather cooperated beautifully for us and the rain/snow that had been forecast held off so we could enjoy the show.

2It was almost as great to just see the gardens after dark as anything. Here the moon rises over the science pyramid. I drank copious amounts of tea a chatted and laughed with good friends.

5After seeing my photos from Friday, Tabby begged to go to the exhibit. It’s something I’d been planning to take the kids to see … just hadn’t gotten around to it just yet. So I agreed and ordered up the only tickets we could get – for 9 am on Sunday.

7The second trip was just as great. I got to see all the pieces that I hadn’t been able to see at night …

10And see some others in a whole new light.

8And in addition to the beautiful artwork, we got to take in the beautiful fall scenery.

9… and make some cool discoveries, like these GIANT (they’re bowling ball sized, for real) turnips and a plaid cactus and a tree with ccamouflagebark!

6They even got to have chai lattes as a treat. That’s hard to beat.

Weekend in Vail

DSC_9854We went to Vail for Labor Day Weekend. Owing to moving and camping and LIFE, we had not been there since ski season, and since I actually like it better in the summer, I was happy when my sister proposed we go.

After a long fight with traffic, we got there and crashed.

DSC_9477

The next morning, we tried to go to Hanging Lake to hike, but there weren’t any parking spots!!! At 9 am!! yeesh.

DSC_9489So we found another hiking spot in nearby Glenwood. It really wasn’t our favorite and didn’t have much to recommend it besides some pretty wildflowers ….

DSC_9493And a nice view of Glenwood. Not much tree cover, near a water treatment plant, pretty meh. But that’s OK.

We had a nice lunch at The Pullman, a charmingly casual but very nice restaurant in Glenwood Springs. Dad and I split a peach bourbon BBQ pork sandwich. Yum.

DSC_9644Afterward, we drove on to Paonia (just 1.5 hours away!) and went peach picking at this cool little farm.

DSC_9602The peaches were GORGEOUS! We bought 35 lbs of them.

DSC_9585The kids had a wonderful time running around outside …

DSC_9620And playing on the cart …

DSC_9567And hanging with Daddy

DSC_9544

And checking out the grapes.

DSC_9547They make wine there too and the grapes were looking good!

DSC_9557They also grow flowers, more fruit, a ton of veggies and apples! Wish it were just around the corner instead of 4 hours away (from Denver).

DSC_9670They definitely had the “cute farm” thing down, complete with vintage truck for Ben to drive.

DSC_9690We saw this beautiful little water fall on the side of the road on the way back to Vail and had to stop and check it out. It was a very cool hidden gem. We got back to Vail late after having dinner at Moe’s Original BBQ in Eagle and played games and chilled.

The next day, we had a leisurely morning and picked up Matt’s brother who was in a nearby town for a wedding. Then we had the birthday lunch at Mountain Standard in Vail. This is a sister restaurant to one of our other local favorites, Sweet Basil. We had super super yummy food an exchanged gifts and had dessert. We all agreed we didn’t have to eat for a long time to come.

DSC_9776

After lunch, we took a walk to Betty Ford Garden which is crazy beautiful no matter the season.

DSC_9860We got some family shots of the four of us, none of which turned out, despite the fact that my sister snapped 20!! Seriously, they’re all either out of focus or I someone is looking off to the side or something. Grr.

But I snapped this one of everyone else and it’s pretty nice, despite Ben’s goofiness.

A little more chilling and it was time to head home and back to our regularly scheduled lives. Ah well.

Back to the Dunes

dunesWe spent the weekend at what is undoubtedly my favorite places in Colorado – The Great Sand Dunes. I never get over how cool it is to find a GIANT pile of sand in the middle of the Rockies, brought together by a perfect storm of mountain placement and winds. And I think I love it even more now that we visit it as part of a camping trip. Continue reading “Back to the Dunes”

The Haps

1So … a mea culpa on continuing to suck at blogging. I’m trying hard not to give up. But a LOT is going on!! Tons!

We went to family reunion. Where we did things like … hike to a waterfall.

2And take family photos… most of which my kids managed to screw up by being goofy.

3We celebrated other stuff too. Like Matt’s and my 11th anniversary. We mainly goofed around and played video games and stuff like that. Simple.

We celebrated my dad’s b’day! Tabby made him a chocolate cake.

4Then the kids started school yesterday!! Technically nothing changed for Ben. He moved to the next class at the beginning of the summer, but we made a big deal like he was just starting too. The super good news is that his best buddy has now moved back into his class. Yay!

5Tabby started first grade! She’s in official specials classes (art, music, PE) and having a lot of fun.

6Her first day was made that much more special because she lost her very first tooth!! During story time. She wants to keep it forever and has refused to surrender it to the tooth fairy in return for the cash reward. Ah well.

So that’s the haps!

We Went on a Cruise Part 2

9So the cruise wasn’t just about being on a cruise. It was about seeing ALASKA! And we did.

Note: before I go on, I must give props to the post-processing my talented husband did in Photoshop. He brought out the colors beautifully and removed some of the haze you get in the area – STUNNING!

10

Anyhoo, one of our days at sea was basically dedicated to checking out the Tracy Arm glacier/area. It is incredible. They do narration on the televisions so you can sit on your balcony and listen to what you’re seeing as you float by, but mostly we spent our time on deck 10 with the masses, enjoying panoramic views. They make it special and have plenty of blankets and hot chocolate available.

17The glacier itself is kind of beautiful, but the scenery around it is spectactular. We didn’t see any “calving” where hunks of ice fall off the glacier into the water and make huge waves, but we did see seals and bald eagles. That was neat (photos were way too far away to be any good!).

11Our first day in port was at Skagway where we mad the excellent choice to ride the railway into BC. This was our favorite shore excursion and though it was LONG (and ended with a fairly cheesy gold-panning deal), it was worth it. The views were amazing.

12This is the very aptly named “inspiration point.”

18At the top, where it sort of levels out, there are the most amazing streams with either absolutely crystal clear water (from rainfall) or this beautiful blue water from glacial melt.

13

Our second port of call was Juneau where we went to see the Mendenhall Glacier … see cheesy tourist shot above ….

15and whale watching. We got far too little time on the glacier unfortunately and probably a little too much time on the whale watching boat. We did see a whoooole bunch of whales though!! This photo is of them doing “bubble feeding” in a group of nine.

14We also got to see sea lions which I thought were possibly cooler than the whales, though they don’t do much. These guys are the jumbo-sized cousins of the California variety you see at zoos. These are “juveniles” that will grow to be about 4x the size of the CA ones.

16Our last port was Ketchikan. It was mostly tourist-trap type shopping (we shipped ourselves home a ton of smoked salmon). We took a Duck tour there which was pretty meh. A duck is an amphibious vehicle. The original ones were used in the D-Day invasion in WW2. This is a modern duck. I’ve been a few duck tours before and they were always fun but this one either because of our narrator or because of the “sights” of Ketchikan was not too great – but at least it was short!

Shore excursions were OK, but there are a lot better options when your kids get older – cycling, hiking, etc. I would also pick with a more careful eye next time. I think some of the ones that included food (freshly caught salmon or crab!) would be great. Everything we went on, even the 6 hour ones really didn’t have much available and we were starving when we got back to the boat. Makes for cranky kids and parents.

I’m planning another post on our time in Vancouver and then a general post about my experiences cruising with Disney (hopefully before the week is out) and that will finish up my More Than You Probably Wanted to Know About Our Vacation series.

Camping at Maroon Bells

1We had the good fortune of booking the only two camper sites in the Silver Bells campground near the Maroon Bells outside Aspen. Aside from the nearly 4 hour drive, there is nothing but good to say about this spot. The campground is beautiful. Check out the views.

6The bells, super famous and very beautiful aren’t far from the campsite. We parked nearby and took a short hike to view the bells.

3Then we hiked to crater lake, about 2 mile away. The water is so clear you can see to the bottom of the water from all the way up on the trail.

2Ben, our most novice hiker, did a great job, hiking almost the whole way without too much whining.

4Loki probably enjoyed the hike more than anyone. He went swimming in Crater Lake, chasing sticks for about 30 minutes. Just wish it had helped out his spring shedding!

5The area is named for the beautiful aspen trees that are found everywhere. Aspens are the largest organisms in the world as a whole grove is linked by roots underground. This accounts for them all changing color at once.

We went into the town of Aspen a couple of times … once by car. We walked around and got ice cream and firewood and checked out the scene. It’s a pretty town. There are a bunch of pretty older homes and it’s been kept up well. We also got a nice bike ride with the kids in on Sunday just before we left.

We’d love to go back and next time we’d love to stay a little longer.

April in Instagrams

AprilInstagrams

Another month has come and gone!! It was a great one, a crazy one. One filled with much fun and loads of changes, big and small. I instagrammed them all! Except the third. Don’t know where the third went. 😉

Favorite Ben Photo: love him hanging with his chalk b’day art (21)
Favorite Tabby Photo: Tabby playing chopsticks (20)

Favorite Other Photo: I love the photo of Hedgie because that is precisely her cute look (and she’s hard to photoraph!).

A key for posterity’s sake – Continue reading “April in Instagrams”
