Rebate Game

Well, I got a new computer this past week. We had actually ordered it in early July when CompUSA did this whole midnight madness thing. It's about a $500 computer and we got it for $200 … after rebates, of course. Since we're such geekos in our house, we've always got a pile of rebates to send in because practically anything that's a good deal from CompUSA you have to get a rebate for. Actually, electronics in general, wherever they come from usually have a rebate. We've probably sent in about 10 this year already. They're a pain in the ass, but they won't go away because, of course, they work the way the companies want. 41% of people forget to turn in their rebates. I get a little pissy with all these games, especially when you get two rebates on the same product and they both want the original receipt. C'mon!!!

I'm very fond of places that don't make you jump through hoops for your discount. Usually Target and Wal-Mart (though I hate Wal-Mart in many other ways) are pretty good about this. My theory is that if we all send in our rebates they'll decide that they're not such a good scam anymore and get rid of them … so people, SEND IN THOSE REBATES!

  1. Yep. They're banking on people fogetting…Like me. But, every once in a while, I remember to send rebates in, and then, I forget that I did b/c they take so long for the checks to arrive!

Ps…Don't quote me, but it's to my understanding that prices are jacked up to cover the “rebate.” And that's why I can't agree with you more that rebates suck–and beware if you don't follow their instructions! They quickly take your money, but certainly make you jump through rings of fire to get what's owed to you and give you nothing back if you forget one little piece of info!

  2. Hmm, interesting theory, Jess. I almost never turn in my rebates because I am THAT lazy. Though, we are expecting a lot of money back from a Vonage hardware buy, so I really should. Thanks for the reminder!

  3. I always forget…I love your sign! And, yes, I must say, I am not a big fan of Wal-mart. It starts out great at the grand opening and then goes down hill from there.

  4. Hi Jesser!
What I hate is when you do turn them in and YOU GET NOTHING in return! That happened once when I bought a digital camera….I was supposed to get another (cheaper) model for free….I”m still waiting!
    Anyway, I LOVE COMPUSA!
Rite Aid has pretty good rebates too as they're all online. Your receipt comes w/ a code number that you enter online! So neat!
