Princes and Princesses

I'm sitting here at my desk programming (well actually now I'm writing this) and watching Love Story … not pictured on the left, I might add. It's one of those classic older movies that I'd never seen before, so I decided to give it a try. I'll admit I've only been watching it half-heartedly, but it's definitely a period piece … a sappy one at that. I know it'll end badly, so that doesn't sit well with me, but I guess it's one of those train-wreck things. Plus, that guy's pretty cute.

Anyhow, they've just shown a trailer for The Prince and Me. Which is the new Julia Stiles movie … about how she meets a prince masquerading as a commoner and falls in love. Sad-Oh that I am, this is the exact type of movie that I luv. Light, airy, fluffy, with bits of humor and heavy on the romance. Princes are good too. What can I say? I'm shallow.

I'm also a bit of a royal-o-phile – Is that a word? It must be as I've just used it – as well, really. I snatch up copies of any magazine that decides to put Prince William (or Harry, I'm not picky!) on the cover … and I love those shows about the royals (not the dramatic stuff though, just the fluffy stuff). I also love The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot. They're fun, interesting little books. And the newest one comes out TODAY! I'll be going to B&N later, I think.

I also found out today that Gurinder Chadha (Bend it Like Beckham) is making another film. It's called Bride and Prejudice and it's a Bollywood version of Pride and Prejudice with musical numbers and stuff … sounds like great fun.

Okay, I'm done blathering about my media pursuits. Oi.

Oooh! Pictures!

Well, I've finished downloading the pictures from France. Just our pictures count 544. Kelly has more. I'll find a different way to put these up on the site … there's going to be just too many. Right is just a tiny sample of the pictures we took.

We had such a great time in France. We saw amazing things, beautiful things, weird things, ate great food, saw amazing art, and really really enjoyed ourselves.

We're Home

Well we're home. Yeesh. We left Nice (Villefranche) yesterday at like 6 AM France time and we have barely stopped since then. We took a 5.5 hour train to Paris, stayed overnight, and then took the train to the airport, plane to Chicago, bus to Janesville, and the car home. Woo! We'll pick the puppy up tomorrow. Little sis, whose flight was cancelled, should get home tomorrow too.

It was a great trip. Pictures and commentary will be coming soon …

And We're Off!

We're off today on a whirlwind tour of France. We'll spend a couple days in Paris and then tour the countryside … and umm… drink wine and stuff.

We've got tons of cool stuff planned and I'm planning to take lots of pictures. Ooh! That reminds me … I'd better stick Gugu in my backpack. He cannot be left behind!!

Of course, we're really looking forward to the trip. My French is miserable and Matt's is non-existant, but hopefully with the aid of a guide book and the sorta-French-speakin' little sister, we'll be AOK. Plus, I do know how to say, “I don't speak French. Do you speak English?”

Ugly Americans, party of 3.

I Luv the Net

I recently came across Postcards for Mom. It's a site where this guy has asked the good people of the internet to send his mom a postcard or other bit of mail from wherever they might be. The deal is that his mom has no idea he's asked him to do this. So she's at home, getting all this mail and going, “Where the heck is all this coming from?” Anyhow, it's so damn funny. All I can say, is, I wish I'd thought of it first!

Doggie Embarassment

So we're going on vacation soon and May is going to stay with a co-worker of Matt's. So yesterday we took her out to their house to meet them and their dog and check out her home-away-from-home. She met the dog … they sniffed each other and we started talking to May's host parents about our upcoming trip. All of a sudden, we look over and there's May having a squat in the corner of their dining room. That's right! Our classy classy dog was doing her business right on their dining room carpet. Way to make an impression, May!

I still don't know why she did it. Nervousness? Wanting to mark her territory? She'd had ample opportunity just minutes before … but oh no. Yeesh. Luckily it was err … umm.. solid. And no stains.
Ick.

The Friday Five

I didn't know what to post this morning, so I thougt I'd give The Friday Five a try.

What was
1. …your first grade teacher's name?

Mrs. Sanchez, but she left half way through our year to have twins, so we had a “permanent” substitute called Mrs. Robinson.

2. …your favorite Saturday morning cartoon?
I don't know … Smurfs probably.

3. …the name of your very first best friend?
Lukie, probably. We let the rabbits out of their cages at nursery school (or so I'm told … I don't have any personal recollection of this event)

4. …your favorite breakfast cereal?
Corn Pops!

5. …your favorite thing to do after school?
Probably drawing …

Omarosa, You're Fired!

I've really enjoyed The Apprentice … with one exception. Omarosa. Every week she's been whiny, snotty, superior, and catty and now she's gone. That's right, The Donald fired her this evening. We no longer have to hear her whining about her plaster-induced injuries or endure one more of her self-righteous speeches. And I'm glad. Glad glad glad glad glad.

In other news, Miss Bad Dog (May) managed to eat 3/4 of a leftover pizza that we very unwisely left sitting on the kitchen table. It was our bad … but in our defense, she can't even make it into the back of the car on her own, so … anyhow, we're putting down a rather large plastic painting tarp this evening in the hopes that if she gets sick… well you get the idea. I hope she's OK. Ugh.

The Princess Bride

Very few media items would ever get an entire post devoted to them, but The Princess Bride is truly worthy. It's a movie of the finest caliber. And I'm not talking Oscar Contender. It's a classic … loved by all. You can check out its page in the media section to see what its about … I won't go into it.

The reason I'm posting about this is that I needed something new for my MOTD … it was blank and I wanted movie quotes. So I ran into a bunch from The Princess Bride, which got me thinking …

When I first saw this movie, I was probably about 8 or 9. I watched it with my family in our living room and I remember laughing like crazy. I hadn't really wanted to see it because I was a tomboy and it was called The Princess Bride, for goodness sakes. But watch it I did and of course, I loved it. It's one of the family faves. A movie my sister and I quote to each other. And it's got a lot of good quotes (if you're a daily reader, you'll find some as my MOTDs for a while). But that first time isn't my favorite time that I've seen it. When we were in our sophomore year of college, they decided to actually let the students pick what movies they'd show at the campus theatre (usually it's a bunch of artsy stuff) and Princess Bride was picked. I had to go see it. And I had to take Matt with me. He too was skeptical of a movie called The Princess Bride. But I convinced him he had to go. It was a Saturday night at midnight (so I guess, technically, it was Sunday morning). All of the frat parties were winding down and a ton of drunk college kids filled the small theatre. I don't think there was a seat to spare.

The movie began … and it was one of those great theatre-going experiences. Everyone laughed at all the right parts. People were all saying the famous lines together … “Anybody want a peanut?” I've rarely heard Matt laugh so hard. A really really fun evening.

So … If you haven't seen this movie. Correct that situation immediately.

Sick Computer

My computer has been sick. It's been going on for quite a while and now htey really think they've got it figured out. They think it was just a bum memory chip. The nice fellow from Dell came over and replaced it this morning along with the power cable that was fraying and the clip that keeps the battery in which had disappeared. So now it's running with full memory again … thank goodness.
