The Definition of Crazy

It's been so crazy busy lately that I need half the week to sum up what we do allllll weekend. But no more. Here's what we did this weekend, short version:

Friday:
• Tabby's babysitter was off on Fri, so Matt watched her in the morning and then I left work early and after lunch we had a 2 hour nap!!
• Holly and her boys came over for dinner (grilled pizza) and we went to the pool and played and then played at the playground in our PJs!

Saturday
• Matt let me sleep in
• Then we took off up into the mountains to do a nice (and muddy) hike at Guanella Pass
• then we had lunch at The Happy Cooker (home of the world's most fab home-made bread)
• and ice cream afterwards
• then we went home and I made the desserts for Father's Day
• then I went and met up with my mom's group for a really fun night of laughs at Wit's End
• then I came home and Matt and I finished up desserts and made potato bites for Father's Day … we were up 'til midnight

Sunday
• we woke up bright and early and collected grandpa and aunt gaga
• we had bagels
• and then headed up the mountain again for another hike
• Mount Evans.
• gorgeous hike, but Matt miscalculated the distance (or the start point?) and turned a 6 mi hike into an 8.5 mi hike. yikes.
• 4.5 hours later we were starved and tired, so we headed home
• and had a very nice father's day dinner
• now it's time to pass out

Happy Father's Day!!

The Fun Continues

Sat morning Matt and I had gym date as we've been trying to do every Saturday for a few weeks now. The only difference was that Tabby wasn't with us. That was probably a good thing since she's not a huge fan of the nursery at the gym. So we went and ran and lifted weights. Then we picked up breakfast at the grocery store and headed off to go garage-saling. Three neighborhoods in our area (including ours) were having garage sales. We picked up some great stuff. A teeny stroller for Tabby's doll, an antique typewriter ($10), some kid books. Our two big buys were a dollhouse for Tabby … a giant wooden thing with 100+ all wood and cloth pieces to it … dolls and beds and a teeny vacuum. It's darling and was only $20. And the air compressor. Matt obsessed for a few hours about it (and placed phone calls to other guys to discuss its merits) before he decided to go for it. It is apparently a great deal … and it is now sitting in the garage looking large and industrial. Yay.

Somewhere along the line Mom and Kelly and Tabby came back over and met us and joined in the fun. Soon, Tabby got hungry and so we went to Daphne's for lunch and then wandered around the outdoor mall and checked out Borders for some new books. After that, Matt retreated to his wood shop to work on my spice rack (such a cliche, but that's really what he's working on!) and Mom and Kells and I took Tabby to our neighborhood pool for the first time this year. She had a blast running around the “sprayground” and toddling around the baby pool. Too bad the sun went behind a cloud and it got all windy about 20 min after we got there. She was shivering and rode home in her wagon wrapped head to toe in towels.

Sometime later after showers and a trip to Target, my dad arrived with pizza and we ate outside and had s'mores and a few rounds of MarioKart afterwards. Continue reading “The Fun Continues”

Working Girl

My mom had Miss T today. But she decided to make it a working day anyhow. I went into the office in the morning and then we travelled together to a satellite office so she could do a review and I could do a software demo with some of our coworkers down there. It's a small office and Tabby couldn't get in the way much or interrupt any meetings and the two ladies that work down there are absolutely lovely and they love to get a visit from Tabby occasionally, so we took a little road trip to C. Springs.

Tabby wandered around and as funny as it sounds, the office is a pretty good place for her to wander around because it's mostly just halls with not a lot for her to get into. So she had a great time … and we got to be with her and get work done. After mom had a meeting at the office and I had a date with my laptop (while unsuccessfully trying to get Tabby to take a nap) we did the grocery shopping for the graduation party. Tabby was asleep before we even got home.

Shortest Weekend Ever

How do the weekends keep getting shorter and shorter? I got off early on Fri and had lunch with Matt. Then I picked up Tabby early from daycare and we went to the library “booo? boo boo boo” and came home and had a nice evening in. Saturday we did our normal stuff and then went to the zoo. It was a nice day and Tabby had a great time. Pizza at Uno's was a hit too. Sunday Matt and I went skiing and Tabby spend the day with my mom. Our weather was crap, and I was having trouble skiing since I fatigued myself running the day before (at least I hope that was what was up).

Today we toured three different schools. We're not making any moves right now, but at some point she'll need to move into a preschool. Only one out of three fits us. One is too far away and the other would cost us $23,000/year. No, that is not a typo. It is an all day montessori program, but still. They must be high. Anyhow, the search continues.

Sleeping Beauty

Ever since Tabby was about 2.5 months old, she's slept through the night in her own crib. I am very driven by how much sleep I do or do not get, so this has been a major blessing. But lately, her sleep patterns have been off.

Looking back, I know exactly why. Like most families with a young'un we got various bugs most of the winter. They were shared throughout the house. And when Tabby was sick, she would wake up during the night. Sick and sleep deprived ourselves, we frequently took the easy way out and plopped her into bed with us.

But it has gotten so bad lately that while she was still going to sleep in her own bed (though not as graciously as she once did), she would wake up in the middle of the night and EXPECT to come sleep in our bed. One night this weekend, when I went in to comfort her, I picked her up and she pointed at the door as if to say, “Time to go.”

For many reasons, I don't feel the family bed is right for us. I won't get into those dogmas, but that's been our decision. So to have this situation was not ideal and I knew we needed to fix it. Continue reading “Sleeping Beauty”

12 Month Checkup

We finally got Tabby in for her 12 mo checkup on Wednesday. They had plenty of appointments (they always do), but between her party and having friends in town, etc. we chose to put it off because she *always* gets sick when she has a checkup.

Her checkup was fine. She's right on track for everything and weighing in at 19 lbs, 2 oz and she's 28 1/2 inches tall, putting her at 22nd percentile for both height and weight. She was supposed to get 4 shots, but since we have a history of autism in our family I wanted to space them out a bit and not overload her little system. For the record, I have no idea if any of that makes a difference, but I figured it couldn't hurt. She also totally won over her doctor by asking to be held by her (i.e. putting her arms out to her). Apparently pediatricians don't get this much… go figure.

So the appointment was fine, and she had her preventative tylenol, but like clockwork, she got sick that evening. She was fussy when she went to bed and then woke up in the middle of the night and could not be consoled. We brought her to bed with us and she proceeded to throw up all over us … and the bed … twice. We changed the sheets and our clothes and tried to go back to sleep. She ended up in her pack 'n' play in our room and was restless all night. Yesterday we kept her home. She was feverish, sleepy and very clingy and fussy. She seemed to be improving last night though. We'll hope for a better day today.

Happy Easter

Hi all! Hope your Easter weekend was as lovely as ours was. This was Tabby's second Easter, but she was a bit more interested in the proceedings this year than last. We started the morning off by opening her Easter basket. The Easter bunny left her a bit of candy and some small bits and bobbles: new socks, Dora the Explorer bubbles, chubby crayons, bath coloring tablets, a cinnabon lip balm, etc. She got to eat a chocolate peanut butter bunny … which she enjoyed quite a bit.

While I ran, Matt and Tabby had breakfast and made up some potatoes for lunch. After a little breakfast, a nap, and a shower, we put Tabby's Easter dress on. Lisanne and family had sent her a darling dress for her b'day and I knew right away it woudl be perfect for Easter … and it was! Soon after we headed to my Grandma's. Usually we do an egg hunt with all of the kids, but most everyone was away on spring break and Tabby isn't quite there yet, so we just enjoyed lunch with everyone and had a nice visit.

Despite a very busy day, Ms. Tabby had no notion of napping when we got home (though Matt and I were more than ready). But I got a nap in while Matt and Tabby played and we had a nice quiet evening at home, digging ourselves out from under a pile of laundry.

Shortest weekend ever.

Updates

* Tabby had her last swim class tonight. She got a certificate saying she passed all of the aspects of the class, which she did, except for blowing bubbles. She did that once, but I'm pretty sure it was accidental. Also, her teacher thought her name was “Jacob” … and then “Devon.” Should have bought the pink swimsuit.
* 9K training is going … err … OK. I sort of took a 4 day hiatus when we went to the mountains. I skiied and stuff, but I don't run on ice. That's just a bad idea. Tuesday I could only run 10 min cuz I got a horrible side stitch (whassup with that?!?). Today was more of the same, but I “ran through the pain.” Doesn't that make me sound athletic? 😛
* Finished In the Woods last night (stayed up too late). I thought it was a good ending, but left a plot line WIDE open, which ticks me off.
* Have decided I hate philosophy. Don't know if I can make it through this book … it isn't funny. At least I have No 1 Ladies' Detctive Agency on hold at the library … but I'm trying to give it a fair shake.
* Still have not managed to cook a meal at home this week. Tonight's dinner was Taco Bell. And I have no leftovers for tomorrow … so Lean Cuisine again, I guess.
* House is a mess. House is always a mess. I need like a solid week off to do some major cleaning.
* Lucy is having a big ol' sale. Must fight urge to spend money on cute clothes.
* Why didn't anyone tell me Easter is THIS WEEKEND?!? The Easter bunny needs to get his act together.

One Whole Year … but still my baby!!

I had planned to do a special 1 year old photo session with Ms. Tabby tonight. But by the time we went to dinner, ran one quick errand (my swimsuit imploded and I needed a new one for tomorrow night!!), she was down for the count. We got her home and couldn't even bring ourselves to change her out of her clothes and into PJs (she was wearing a soft onesie). We gave her her meds and a bit of milk and put her into her crib. She cuddled up with her frog immediately. She's grown into such a big girl, but she still wants snuggles when she's sleepy.

There's so much to say about the wonder and amazement this past year has brought to us. In my wildest dreams, I could not have imagined how wonderful it would be to bring a life into this world and nurture that life. I am unspeakably proud of our daughter. She's kind and affectionate. She's feisty and stubborn. She's intelligent and talkative. She's inquisitive and irrational. And my observation from a few months ago still stands … she's really advanced in two things: eating and flirting. Hahah.

She's reached most of those first year milestones … words … crawling … eating … sleeping throug the night … feeding herself. But I don't think of those things when I think of her. I think of her holding a remote control to the side of her head all cockeyed and pretending that it's a phone, saying “haaai” and a long string of incomprehensible (at least to me) babble. I think of her blowing kisses to all of those around her. I think of her melting the crustiest old biker guy into a pile of goo. I think of her slurping her spaghetti. I think of the giant smiles she gives us when we come to pick her up. I think of the occasional night when she just can't quite make it on her own to dreamland and we sit together in the rocker and I rock her to sleep … and she sighs that beautiful baby sigh as she drifts off.

It has been so amazing being her mommy and seeing her grow and change before my very eyes. I am excitedly awaiting each new day and tenatively holding on to the present at the same time. Here's to many many more beautiful years together.
