Chilly Monday

After a chilly weekend, it is a chilly Monday. I am wearing a sweater at the office and I'm particularly glad for that. We had a nice weekend, though … pretty typical. Saw my family, ran errands, went to the gym, did housework and hung out at home. It was quieter than many. Very nice.

Of course, we bought food for the week … lemon chicken fingers and butternut squash, fried rice, spaghetti (with squash and mushrooms), clam chowder. The kids have colds and slept quite a bit. I played Farm Frenzy 3 (a great use of my time, I know) and got caught up on The Office and Top Ceviche and Project Runway.

My “smart” phone is dying. It will randomly decide to download ALL (as in all 2000+) of my Yahoo! messages and completely bog down my phone. The fix for this involves an hour long deleting process and adding the account again. Lovely. At least the smart phones are getting cheaper … I can probably get the one I want (when I figure out which one that is) for under $200.

I just signed Matt and I up for a 4 mile Turkey Trot. Hope he still wants to be married to me when he finds out.

We have officially moved Ben out of the infant carrier. It is better for lifting, but its own irritating situation since it's much harder to move him while sleeping and also to maneuver him around in a restaurant or store since he is only kinda sitting up just yet. But he can hold his bottle … well. That kid has his priorities straight.

Tabby at 2.5

The months have been flying by at an alarming rate. Now here we are, Tabby half way through her third year as a member of our family. Unbelievable.

To say we are enjoying our little lady would be the understatement of the year. Everyday, it seems, she cracks us up with her bigger-than-life personality and impresses us with her observations or empathy. I have thoroughly enjoyed being at home with her this summer and will miss her like heck when I head back to work next week.

Tabby is a big girl in so many ways. She made the transition from crib to bed with nary a hitch. The binky is long gone. We’re going on a full year of feeding herself with proper utensils. And she talks in full and complete sentences. Some of the observations she makes absolutely delight me, like when I showed her the cauliflower I was cooking for dinner and she commented that it was “like broccoli.” And she absolutely slayed us this past weekend when, while trying to figure out how something went together, exclaimed “What the devil?!” Another favorite Tabby “thing” is that she gives select loves names. Her Pound Puppy is named “Rocket,” presumably after Rocket from Little Einsteins. And her Alphabet Worm is called Traycee, presumably after my aunt. When he is turned on, he says “Hi! I’m alphabet worm.” And Tabby corrects him, “No, you Traycee!” Continue reading “Tabby at 2.5”

Twice in One Week!

It is still pretty early in our house. Tabby has had quite a few late nights in a row – amazing how our “Blissfully Slow” week turned crazy – and I am hoping she'll sleep at least a bit longer. I have been up for almost an hour and a half. Ben woke up and we got him back to sleep and I stayed up for the sheer peace and quiet. Scratch that. Tabby just woke up. Alright. Back to bed. It is amazing how much I can get accomplished in just a short amount of time when I have no distractions. Amazing!

I only have a few weeks until I go back to work full time. Next week should be pretty routine but the week after that, I have convinced my over-worked husband to actually take some time off work … a whole week in fact. I may have to lock up his laptop and throw away the key, but I want some time to enjoy with him and the kids before it's back to the grind.

We have no set plans to go out of town or anything like that. I want to check out a few places in the area that I've heard of and haven't managed to get to yet. I want to spend an hour or more at the gym each day (we are training for a 10K). I want to hit the zoo again. Maybe go berry picking. Maybe do a thing or two around the house.

The last week off, I am planning on sending the kids – maybe sometimes just Tabby, sometimes both of them – to our sitter and getting things a bit more organized. I want to have all more of my ducks in a row so that transition will not be quite as manic as it otherwise might be.

And now I must head back to reality. Ben has been making quite the ruckus while I've been typing this and I need to get over there and change his diaper before it's an even bigger mess!

Cutie and the Crank

Tabby was really cute today. After I picked her up we got some more one-on-one time since Daddy was working and then in his shop. I don't remember what I said (some random declarative statement) and she responded by patting me on the arm and then said “I know, I know.” This was followed by her observation that something was “kinda weird.” Where the heck does she come up with these things? I brought her out on the font porch and got her to pose for some photos. She was not really much into this idea at first and then totally hammed it up. She seems like such a big girl to me these days and I'm sure it will be even more apparent when her little brother makes his appearance. *sigh*

I on the otherhand was a piece of work. I can't remember if I got to this part with Tabby or if I was just extra bad due to lack of sleep or something, but I was huffing and puffing everywhere I went and could hardly keep up with the normal stuff – just picking up around the house and that sort of thing. But I still managed to fold a ton of laundry (Tabby's from last week and Baby Boy's entire wardrobe) as well as cleaning up the kitchen after dinner. Pure stubbornness – don't underestimate it! I was ready for bed at 8, and Tabby at 7:30 but Matt needed to be in Tabby's room to fit the drawers and such, so Tabby and I read half the books in her shelf while we waited for him. The “comfortable” position I found on the floor left me practically unable to walk (and in tears) after sitting in it for nearly 40 minutes. Needless to say, I am not doing my bit towards finishing the drawers this evening. It is a bit of computer time and then off to bed for me.

Halfway to Human

I am happy to report that Tabby had a much better night last night and I am not so much the zombie girl as I was yesterday. I have no idea how things will go tonight since she still seems to be having some mouth issues (still no idea what those are) but she only woke up a few times and that is a huge improvement over the previous night. She also slept all night in her big girl bed. Yay!

This week is shaping up to be pretty uneventful. I'm mainly trying to stay on top of things and get just a few more things done before Baby Boy arrives. We've been having pretty nice weather and since getting the garden ready is definitely on our list, I am thinking we should head outside this evening. Tabby can even use her new shovel and rake she got for Easter.

I also need to come up with a menu for the next week. Nothing too elaborate since I know things will probably be somewhat irregular, but I am finding myself bored with all of the usual suspects. I will have to pull out the cookbooks tonight. If this weather holds, I am thinking grilled. Ahh summer… I cannot wait for you to arrive!

Fingers Crossed

Tabby had quite the night last night. She was up and down A LOT. No one got much sleep … and at about 4 AM we decided… time to see the doctor. Of course only the ER is open at 4 AM so we had to wait.

Matt took Tabby to the doc's this morning. She is funny about going to the doctor's … she was excited to go and then freaked out when she got there. She did not enjoy her visit, though she did get a popcicle at the end of it and then the whole way to the sitters she told Matt over and over that she felt better (perhaps in a ploy to not have to go back?). Hehe.

Anyhoo … long story short, doc couldn't find anything wrong with her. Strep culture negative. Ears clear. Throat not swollen. No fever. Teeth looked fine too (though when we brushed her teeth tonight, she winced when we did the molars).

She seemed to have a better day and has gone to sleep with quite a bit less trouble tonight. Fingers crossed … we all need the sleep!

Happy Easter

Though this was her third Easter, this was the first one Tabby really got to enjoy. Friday she dyed eggs. Saturday she hunted them. Sunday she got a visit from the Easter bunny and then got to hunt eggs again. She very much enjoyed all of the special events, especially the chocolate and “can-ee.”

In general, it was a pretty Tabby-centric weekend. She got to play with her buds and eat Nepali food on Saturday. She got to go swimming on Sunday. All weekend long she got tons of QT with Mommy and Daddy.

Not only are we trying to enjoy our last days as a family of three, but Tabby is also having some troubles. Right now we're assuming it's molars coming in (lots of signs point that way), but with a little cough and some real trouble sleeping, we're starting to wonder if it's not something else working on her. It's been cranky days and unsettled nights and quite a few applications of tylenol.

We got a couple of things on the big to-do list accomplished, but mostly we just maintained the status quo and relaxed quite a bit. I can't complain.

Hope you had a lovely weekend.

What to say?

Thanks for all the sweet comments on Tabby's new bed. I love for Matt to get kudos from people other than just myself. Then he keeps building this crazy stuff I come up with.

Unfortunately, Tabby has not yet gotten to try it out. I selfishly left her at her sitters in order to come home and guarantee myself an hour's nap and she did not get one at all (it's hard because it's such a crap-shoot anyhow) and ended up falling asleep in her high chair, mid-way through dinner around 6 PM. I'm such a good mom. 😛

Matt and our neighbor were able to at least move it into her room and while Tabby slept, Matt and I rearranged her room to accommodate all her furniture plus the crib. We have loved that nursery, so carefully designed for Tabby and it felt almost like desecrating a shrine to rearrange it. It is not quite as aesthetically pleasing as it was before, but it isn't bad. And it will hold two kids. And if those two kids do not share a room well, we'll figure it all out then.

Today felt like Thursday to me … all day long. How I hate that. We had a nice evening out last night, visiting our friends and having dinner. I did not stay up late, but for some reason I was a zombie today. I really need to get to bed so I am not bad again tomorrow. Gooood night!

UPDATE: My husband tells me that last night, Miss Tabby woke up at some point and after asking for her froggy (her favorite lovie), she saw her big girl bed next door (she was in her crib) and wanted to be put in it. Matt put her in there and she went right back to sleep and slept there all night. I guess we'll see what happens tonight.

Big Girl Bed

Dang Matt's good. Am I right? Many many hours + lotsa birch + blood, sweat and tears=Tabby's bed. Matt will be constructing drawers for it this weekend, but other than that, it's a done deal. So far Tabby has been really excited about it … I hope that extends into a desire to sleep in it.

So tomorrow we will move it into her room, leaving her crib for now, and see how she likes it. Fingers crossed.

In other news, my kitchen is currently free of woodworking projects. Yay! However, I expect this will last until sometime this weekend. Boo.
