Thoughts on Baby Travel

One of my biggest reservations about the trip to Hawaii was traveling such a long way with an (almost) 18 month old. Tabby is a good baby, but she's at the stage where she does not appreciate having her mobility limited in any way, especially for a long period of time. So I was on hyper-planning mode for Tabby and her needs, especially during the plane flights. Here's a synopsis of what worked and what didn't:

* the portable DVD player – I think this thing will be a godsend when she gets a bit older, but at her age, it was practically useless on the plane. The best thing we used it for was her music at night. I'm still glad we purchased it though, because I know it will be useful in the future.
* Magna-doodle – This was probably the biggest hit I brought activity-wise. She loved it to bits! Unfortunately the brand I bought (Parents) broke about 2 hours into the plane ride. We limped along with it, but on the way home we used a notebook and pens ($1 total cost, even in HI).
* Books – We have these two books that she is in love with and sat on our laps for many minutes at a time asking “what's that?” over and over.
* FOOD – I made sure to pack as much food as we could carry and I wasn't a bit sad I'd done so.
* new toys – I got some barnyard animals (and a barn and tractor) from the dollar bin at Target as well as a couple of funny animal-looking balls. Both of these were a big hit, partially, I'm sure, because they were new.
* the peapod – this was awesome! tiny in comparison with a play yard (pack 'n' play), but hugely successful – she happily slept in it every night!!
* P&T carrying bag – I am so happy I broke down and bought this thing – it kept our stroller all pretty and turned it into a very effective piece of rolling luggage
* car-seat bag – I was so happy we decided to bring our own car seat and happy that I bought this to carry it in and when we had a heavy suitcase on the way back, Matt tossed his sandals and a couple other things right in there and checked 'em on through

I definitely overpacked. Clothes were the biggest offended since we had a washer & dryer at the ready. But if we hadn't, I wouldn't have packed nearly enough. All the beaching and outdoors stuff we did combined with humidity necessitated many clothing changes.

There are a few other things that we brought that didn't see much use. The baby backpack was only really used on one occasion, though that was mostly because the main trail we were planning to use for a couple of hikes was closed due to a fire. The hiking shoes were also large and not much used. But I still would have packed them since we would have used them had the trail been available.

We mostly used the stroller to go jogging in the morning (which didn't happen as frequently as I would have liked) and only a couple of other times while in Hawaii, but I don't think I'd ever go without one since they're so useful in the airports and they are a free gate-check or plane-check item.

I also packed too many entertainment things for myself for the plane ride. Just my MP3 player and headphones would have been plenty. We both had plenty to do just looking after and entertaining Tabby.

One big upside is that this trip made me a bit less nervous about traveling with Tabby. It wasn't all perfect, but we got through it. And I think I learned a few things for the next go-around.

Aloha Again!

Ahh, yes, we're back. We've been back for a couple of days now if you want to get technical. And we've been busy busy (of course).

The remainder of our trip was delightful. One of the huge highlights for me was a tour of a CHOCOLATE FARM. Which was so very cool. They featured lots of info on the various flora of the island as well which I really enjoyed and they had chocolate tasting. A must-see for any foodie if you're on Kauai. We had some lovely beach time and some not-so-lovely boat time (I got very very seasick) and a rather long two plane-rides home. To say that we enjoyed the vacation would not nearly cover it. None of us wanted it to end, but getting back to reality is a bit nice in some ways too. Continue reading “Aloha Again!”

What's Hawaiian for Update?

It may not surprise you to hear we're having a great time in Kauai. Beaches. Smoothies. Farmer's Markets. Running. Swimming. Fishing. Gardens. Chickens! Fish Tacos. Naps. Gorgeous Scenery. Lots of Fun. Giant Avocados.

The baby has become feral in a few short days. She wants to be “side” (outside) all the time. Yesterday she ran into the backyard, looked at the ocean, put her arms in the air and said “MINE!”

Today she pitched a huge fit because I (get this) tried to make her take a shower indoors. What the hell was I thinking??

This place is incredible and we are enjoying it immensely.

Six Years

Today, Matt and I celebrate our sixth wedding anniversary. I hope it's a good sign that my husband thought it had been just 5 years since we got married.

Happy Anniversary, luv! here's to many many more great years.

Mahalo

We're here. The less that be said about our flight, the better. It could've been worse, I'm sure, but it wasn't easy. But Hawaii? Incredible. Our rental house? Amazing.

Ahh well … No rain. No rainbows.

Aloha!

It's been an exhausting race to the finish, but we leave for Hawaii tomorrow morning. We are 98% packed. Suitcases have been weighed. Loki is visiting at a friend's house. Our house is relatively clean. And we're all exhausted. And excited, I think, beneath all that exhaustion, anyhow.

We've been promised wi-fi at our accomodations, so hopefully I'll be catchin you on the flipside! Until then … Aloha!

More Boringness From Me

Break it down, bullet style:
• Has anyone used one of those You Tube clip converters that actually worked??? I am trying to put some Sesame Street clips on my MP3 player for Tabby and am having NO LUCK.
• Got some of those elastic headbands everyone seems to wear these days and I'm quite a fan … the ball cap gets kind of hot on long runs in the summer.
• I sewed grosgrain ribbon through two of Tabby's binkies tonight. I don't want them rolling around while we're flying.
• I checked out Crafty Mama from the library. It is a really neat read … possibly even for non-moms.
• My friend asked me to run a race for Congolese women today. Sounds like a good time for a good cause. I'm in!
• There are babies popping up everywhere! I just bought a cute outfit for some friends of ours at Babystyle. LOVE that store.
• Tomorrow is my last full day of work before vacation! Friday I'm working a bit in the morning and then I'm going to spend the rest of the day running errands, doing laundry, packing and playing with Tabby. What? She loves to fold laundry. Honest.
• I've had 80 oz of water today. Is that too much?

Four Hours of Sleep is Enough, Right??

I'm going to do it again. I'm going to stay up waaay past my bed time to watch The Olympics. Gymanstics. I love it. Can't get enough. Swimming too. I must be insane.

Dinner tonight came from the garden. Well half of it anyway. We made another mozzarella caprese salad (tomatoes, basil and mozzarella drizzled with balsamic). YUM. Our tomatoes have been pretty prolific, but we've only produced one zucchini. It was a big one (12+ inches long), but, seriously? Who can't grow zucchini.

I've scheduled a Paint Your Own Pottery night for my mom's group in September and I'm getting a pretty good response so far. I haven't done that in years and I'm really looking forward to it. It should be a good time!

I was really psyched with this picture of Loki. He's such a handsome boy, but sometimes his dark coloring makes him a bit hard to photograph, so I love to get a shot of his doggy cuteness.

Ahh, I must fly … Olympic fever is overcoming me again.
