Baby Update

Hi all. Sorry for the radio silence the past couple of days. I actually fully intended to update yesterday, but my server was down, prventing me from doing so …. then other things happened.

We went in for our ultrasound. Everything seemed pretty normal … here's the heart, there's the bladder, etc. but when we asked if everything looked OK, she explained she couldn't tell us that … she's not a doctor. OK we said. We left there feeling just fine about everything. about 2 hours after I got back from work, I got a call from my doctor …she said that the radiology dept. had called her because they were concerned about a few of the findings of the ultrasound. They said my amniotic fluid was low and the baby was measuring somewhat small. Freakout time.

They scheduled us with a perinatologist for today and Matt and I had a really crummy evening waiting and being scared. Today we visited the perinatologist. They did a hi-res ultrasound and checked things out again. All the structures (arms, legs, heart, etc) are A-OK and the baby is actually measuring on schedule. But my amniotic fluid IS on the low side of normal (this is possibly what caused the discrepencies in the baby's measurements). It isn't really a problem right now, but it has to be watched. So we will be heading back to the perinatologist in about a month for another check up.

The other thing we found out is that the baby is a GIRL! Which, of course, is just wonderful. But it's a bit hard right now to start painting the nursery or registering at Babies R Us or anything, and we're kinda taking it one day at a time and keeping positive thoughts on the baby and the amniotic fluid levels.

Hope you can spare us a positive thought or a prayer. We'd be much obliged.

  1. Whew! If the AFI is still in normal range but on the lower side know that this is not uncommon. Be sure to get plenty of rest and hydration = water, water, water.

    Congrats on your baby girl!

  2. Thank goodness baby girl(CONGRATS!!!) is measuring well. I will keep you in my prayers that the fluid level will be where it should be soon. Take good care of yourself!!!!

  4. I had the same thing happen with both kiddies.. Get all the rest you can possibly get. Sending you {{{good vibes}}}. Congratulations!!! A girl!!!!

  5. Make sure you rest – and really rest, like lying down on the couch or in bed on your left side type of rest. Drinking water won't raise your AFI, but do be sure to stay hydrated. I had a low AFI measurement at one point, and rest is what helps.

Also, don't be afraid to ask for more frequent ultrasounds if that helps your peace of mind! Best of luck to you.

  6. Eeeee! Congratulations. How exciting.

Did they give any suggestions for the low AI? My friend was told to drink lots and lots of water. I don't know if it's a medically proven solution, but it can't hurt. 🙂

  7. A GIRL!!! Woo hoo! I'm really happy and excited for you guys! Someone on my parenting e-mail group had low amniotic fluid, too, and her baby turned out just fine. So I guess that happens sometimes. Holding good thoughts for you … keep us posted. If you ever want to talk, please let me know. I'm here!

  8. Oh Jess! It is always scary to be told things are causing concern (believe me, we've been there and I've cried in the u/s tech's office because of it!), but I am glad it's just low AF (lots and lots of water for you, Mrs!!) and that all else looks great (and YAY for girl news! how exciting!!)
