The Basement Remodel: An Update

The basement remodel goes on … framing done, drywall up, taping underway. We hope to be done in 3 or 4 weeks. I don’t think I have any before photos (just imagine your average un-finished basement), but here are some “right now” photos. It’s messy, dusty, etc., but it’s also a remodel, so that’s sort of the deal. There are a few more photos and some more notes in the Basement Remodel flickr set.

The stairs: yep, there used to be a wall there. That was last weekend’s 12-hour project. We won’t finish it quite yet, since we don’t want a banister getting all dinged-up during the remodel.

Coming down the stairs … shop straight ahead, bathroom and office to the right, playroom/bedroom to the left.

The shop. Ain’t it crowded with crap? Yup. Anyhoo, some of that at least is going to go into the garage when we can install some more overhead storage. Some of it will be tucked into cabinets (you can have those when you have walls to hang ’em on). It will still probably be a bit crowded.

Playroom/bedroom: we’ll have some built-ins to the right of the door (bins below, shelves above), along the wall. Futon towards the back, hook-ups for a TV (if we decide we want that) … and a ton of kids toys. Think we’ll paint it blue.

Bathroom: vanity in front of the first wall, toilet, shower/tub on the other side. And below, the tile and light fixture we picked.

Matt’s Office: all the obvious stuff, probably bookshelves along the back wall and he also wants a liquor cabinet in there somewhere (he’s going all Mad Men on me). I want to put some nice black & white prints in there. Also no idea what color we’ll paint in there. Knowing Matt, it will probably be some shade of green. Sorry the photo is terrible … the way the door is positioned, I couldn’t get a good shot.

The carpet will go in very very last (after painting, trim, etc.) and we will probably get a neutral low-pile stain master something or other. The carpet we have upstairs drives me insane with its neediness.
