Rest in Peace

Yesterday, just after I blogged, my phone rang. It was my dad. He was calling to tell me that his mom had passed away.Goldie Fay was born over 93 years ago. She was one of 11 brothers and sisters including a twin sister named Sylvia Ray. She and her siblings were the first generation born in this country to German parents. She lived through the depression and two world wars (but only remembers one). She rasied 5 kids, was blessed with 5 grandkids and 2 great grandkids (plus one on the way!). And countless people that will remember her fondly.

I am one of them. Lucky for me, my dad's parents lived just miles from our house the whole time I was growing up. My sister and I spent long weekends at their house which was like a completely different universe in a lot of ways. Grandpa raised chickens and had a huge garden. Grandma was always sewing, cooking, canning and playing the piano. Grandma made clothes for our dolls, took us on shopping trips to the Alco and didn't make us take naps. She gave us jars of jelly, personalized with our names and played any song we wanted on the piano. We both still have the beautiful quilts she sewed for our beds. We went to the flea market and to the park. Every visit was special.

I'll remember her feisty spirit. I'll remember her countless kindnesses. I'll remember her beautiful music. I'll miss her.

It is oddly appropriate that I get to reminisce about her on this day. My grandma was always a union wife and a white-hot loyal Southern Democrat. She loved her politics and I think it would have pleased her to be eulogized on election day.
