Well, we're back from Yellowstone. We had a very nice time, despite some of the foibles (described later on). We got within feet of bison and saw tons of other animals (wolf, elk, pronghorn antelope, moose). Matt was suitably impressed by the natural wonders the park has to offer and we took about a billion photos (OK, 475). Not everything was exactly as I remembered it … apparently, the hot springs look different from year to year based on a variety of factors, but it was still really cool to share the experience of Yellowstone with Matt. It's truly an incredible place.Well, most of the trip went really well, we had a little problem. Loki … no it's not what you think … he didn't steal all of the pic-i-nic baskets or anything like that. He was an angel. The problem was the park. See, silly us thought that since dogs are allowed in the park and in the cabins that they were welcome in the park. Yea. Not the case.
They can't go ANYWHERE. The trails don't allow them. The thermal areas don't allow them. So it's very hard to do anything with a dog in tow. Loki ended up spending his time in the car in his box (a violation of park rules) while Matt and I made quick runs around the various stops along the road.
So, instead of spending a good 3 days there, we spent 1.5 there. We left Friday afternoon and got home early Sat morning (2 AM). Since we had planned to spend the whole weekend together, that's exactly what we did, lounging around watching DVDs and taking Loki to the dog park to make it up to him.
Oh well… we'll know better next time.
Glad you did have fun. You live and learn. Silly rule though. I wonder if its to keep pets safe from wild animals??
Yea, that's what they say. And of course, I understand that, but there needs to be more of an issue made of it so people don't end up there with dogs who can't do anything.
Yellowstone is an amazing place! I was there a few years ago on a cross-country voyage. Yes, I remember the no pets on trails rule. As a rule of thumb, most national parks are really not so pet-friendly.
Funny Yellowstone story that I didn't think of yesterday when I was commenting lol. I was camping and felt really crappy the second night camping. Feverish and all. I had to pay a visit to the Yellowstone Infirmary the next day and found out I had a bad sinus infection. The meds they gave me made me feel even worse the next couple days as we had to drive through several states. I love telling that story of the Yellowstone Infirmary.
Oh good lord, Marisa, that's hilarious. It reminds me of going to Student
HealthDeath at Vandy. No matter what you had, they'd give you the Vandy Blue Pills which none of us though did a damned thing … but they got to bill our student accounts $20.
