Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Two bedtime related stories:

Tabby
I think I mentioned that we've been letting Tabby have some special “big girl” time playing in her room after we get her ready for bed. For 20-30 minutes her bedtime routine is done, we allow her to hang out in her room and quietly play with toys, read books, draw or work in her alphabet workbooks. It has been great for everyone. She gets some special privileges (which she has to earn through good behavior) and we still get to advance to the kid-free portion of our evening at about the same time.

Last night I put Ben down and then got her ready for bed and let her have her “big girl time.” Then I went for a run on the treadmill. About 30 minutes later, I went to check on her. She'd chosen to read books and had a fair few scattered on her floor by her bed. I told her to please pick them up and helped her get started and then told her to finish the job and go right to bed. I even turned down her lights and put on her music so she'd be all ready to go.

I went back to my room to run for another 10 minutes or so and figured I'd come follow up when I was done. To my surprise, all books were picked up and she was sound asleep in her bed. She didn't even stir when I gave her a kiss and told her how proud I was of her.

Ben
This past weekend we put Ben down for his nap. He either wasn't ready or was over-ready and was not a bit pleased with being left in his crib. Instantly, he bolted for the side and with the aid of the bumpers, started climbing out. He had his head and half his chest over the edge in a matter of seconds. Matt and I were both shocked.

Needless to say, we took the bumpers out. Now we're facing the big boy bed decision. I find myself completely NOT READY to put him in a real bed. Not only do I think we'll have BIG issues with him STAYING in the bed, but I am not really ready to give up the crib and the babyhood it symbolizes. He's only 18 months old! I thought sure he'd be in there a while longer. I'm not sure I can handle it so soon. Of course a broken bone would also be very hard to handle.

All About the Kids

Ben
Ben had his 18 month checkup last week. He is perfect, of course, tracking in the 50th percentile for weight and the 60th for height. Or maybe I reversed those. He also got three shots and barely blinked.

Anyhow, Matt (who took him this go-around) questioned the doc about his milk habit. The kid will go through 2 gallons of milk in a week if we let him. As in we bought two gallons of milk on Saturday and by the next Saturday they were gone. Now Matt uses some for cereal and I use a smidge for cooking, but he also gets milk at his sitter’s. That’s a LOTTA milk! So she said to cut him back drastically, 2cups per day. We decided to ease him into it, closer to 3 cups a day and daaaamn it’s been hard. He wants his milk. And he will stand in front of the fridge and bang on the door screaming “BA BAAAA! BAAAAA BAAAAA!” until he gets it or passes out, whichever comes first. It was not a stress-free weekend but it does seem to be getting a bit better. Maybe.

Tabby
My sister likes to point out all of the atypical things we do that our kids are “just going to think is normal.” Running all the time, cooking all the time, crafting up crazy projects (like Matt’s Halloween project, a silly-string-spitting spider) and having tons of computers and gadgetry everywhere. And we like it that way.

Another thing we do that’s slightly atypical (or so I’m told) is give scientific explanations for her questions. Honestly, I mostly do this because I cannot think of a better way to answer her questions. I don’t see why I’d confuse her with some whimsical poetic crap when I can just tell her what’s up. For example in spring when it was getting warm and things were greening up we talked about our side of the planet getting closer to the sun and the sun and chlorophyll interacting to make the grass green. She loves talking about these things and remembers them almost verbatim. And if we don’t know something we look it up on the internet and she knows to ASK about looking it up on the internet.

So when she asked me last week why her brother’s army truck didn’t go as far or as fast on the carpet as it did on the hardwood floor, I explained to her about friction. And yes, I pulled out the term “coefficient of friction.”

Am I making her into a mini nerd??

Happy Halloween!

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. We sure did. Just wish we got an extra day off in there somewhere … lord knows we could have used it!

The kids went as Pebbles and Bam Bam (hopefully you can tell that from the photo). We got their costumes on Etsy and Ben’s club came from one of the Halloween super stores. It squeaks. Too cute.

For once Colorado weather (notorious for doing all kinds of nasty things on Halloween) cooperated with us and it was very pleasant out. Tabby had tights and a white t’shirt under her costume and we put a t’shirt on Ben as well, but nothing in the way of winter coats was needed. Awesome.

We did not get any pumpkins carved, but Matt made a spider whose eyes lit up when you got close to it and if you were really close it shot silly string at you. But we didn’t use it at our house since we went over to a friend’s house to trick-or-treat.

Now I’m looking forward to a nice quiet week of recuperation until Matt’s mom arrives on Thursday. Never a dull moment, I tell ya.

Ben at 1.5

My baby is growing up so damn fast. It half breaks my heart and half makes me happy. The happy comes from knowing that he’s so much easier now that he’s older.

The past month has been as milestonerific as the others. He is now navigating the stairs (both up and down) on his own, erect. He does not want help unless there is nothing to hold onto and though we still supervise, he is pretty sure-footed – and that includes climbing. He is the master of climbing and will go from stool to chair to table to chandelier (not yet, but I can see it coming!). He really digs music and can be seen clapping and dancing around whenever a good beat can be heard. He still has a lethal aim with his arm which has necessitated the advent of the penalty box, a laundry basket we employ for time-outs. He is not a fan and he seems to be throwing food much less often at the dinner table. Continue reading “Ben at 1.5”

A Good Week

The week is drawing to a close and I have to say, it’s been a nice one, despite the fact that beloved Daddy has been on a business trip. When Matt’s gone, it is undoubtedly more work for me, but I make up for it by being a bit lazy. I usually have most of our meals all ready to go or cook very simple things like tortilla pizzas or (tonight’s selection) grilled cheese and tomato soup.

I also give myself permission to take it a bit easy. I’m not nearly as maniacal about projects and to-do lists. My main goal is to not let the house get too out of hand. And I stick pretty close to home. Tuesday night we had baths and watched Wallace and Grommit. Last night we went to the park, where Ben was ecstatic to find he could do the slide ALL ON HIS OWN. And since I have to get them up earlier than normal, I put them to bed early. Tonight … who knows? But it is especially fun to get some alone time with my little people.

We miss Matt a lot, but it is nice for a little while to get them all to myself. They are pretty amazing and it’s nice to take things slow and soak up some of their sweetness while they’re at these exact ages. I’m a pretty big fan of these two little people.

Ben at 17 Months

Oh Ben! This little guy is every inch a BOY. His favorite activities are running, climbing and throwing … but also, happily, snuggling. The past couple of months have been so much fun with him. He can be frustrating. He loves to throw food and has little regard for the word “no” but all of that fades quickly into the background when he unleashes his darling grin on you and hugs you.

He is doing great with his gross motor skills and he still remains pretty fearless. He finally seems to have some respect for water (yay), but only after tumbling into the baby pool a couple of times. But it seems that any number of bumps on his head will not deter him from climbing anything and everything and running with absolute abandon. He’s so much fun to watch … and even when he crashes, the tears are non-existent or pretty short lived. He also loves to dance and clap and seems to appreciate music every bit as much as his sister.

He is talking some more and starting to sing (“Row Row Row!!!”). He keeps adding a word or two to his vocabulary every day. My favorite is “Cheeeee!” for cheese. It is always said as a battle cry for one of his favorite foods. I also love the way he says baby. It is very clear and done with an odd (for Ben) tenderness and he is correspondingly quite gentle with babies.

His gentleness is not so apparent with the rest of us. He throws things pretty indiscriminately. I know it’s not to be mean, but it hurts when he hits you say on the cheekbone with a dense bouncy ball. And his sister is currently sporting a 3″ (no joke) scratch across her chest from his claws. Time outs have been pretty ineffective with him, since he would just get up and be on his merry way (over and over) the second you sat him down. So now we employ a penalty box (a laundry basket) for his time outs. He can stand up, but he so far won’t get out of it and it’s doing the trick. We’ll see how long it lasts.

He still drinks his milk with great gusto, going through over a gallon a week just at home. He loves string cheese and any kind of fruit you can think of and he’s always happy to scarf down a meatball or four and the pasta to go with them. He’s trying desperately to feed himself with a fork but has issues getting the payload from bowl to mouth. The system works better when we can spear something for him to deliver, but falls apart with soup and rice. He will not allow us to spoon-feed him anything except applesauce. I suppose applesauce alone is worth the indignity.

I am constantly grateful that we get to have this amazing little person in our family. I love everything about him from his snuggles to his crazy boy-ways. He is one of a kind, my little guy.

Snip Snip!

Yesterday, an awful thing happened.

Overall, he did pretty well, especially with the help of some lovely distracting bubbles.
But mama DID NOT!

Now the curls are all gone and he looks sooo grownup. *SOB!!!*
Where did my little boy go?
Didn’t we just get him like yesterday?

Ben at 15 Months

Little MAN turned another month old on Saturday. It is impossible to relate to you how amazing he is. We are so enjoying having this little guy as part of our family. He’s so wonderfully different from Tabby both in his personality and his developmental progression.

We sometimes call his sister “Timid Tabby” but to be fair, maybe we should call him “Brash Ben.” We walk near a river and he is completely fascinated and practically ready to dive in. At the water fountains and spray grounds (I don’t dare take him to the pool on my own), he runs through the water with abandon and glee. He climbs anywhere and everywhere and is terribly pleased with himself to summit any object. He knows good and well how to back down stairs but whines until someone will take his hand and he can walk down. He will practice any small elevation transition repeatedly until he can do up and down all on his own, no crawling. He has had quite a few injuries from his escapades, including most recently (this weekend) a bloody lip, nose and tooth all from one fall. Continue reading “Ben at 15 Months”

Chipping Away at That List

I stopped at Target on my way home last night to do the dreaded task: swimsuit shopping. All I've got right now is my old maternity suit that (thank god) no longer fits. So I had to get a new one and quick because we had plans. Is there any woman on the planet that ENJOYS swimsuit shopping?? I mean aside from the unnatural supermodel ilk? I doubt it. But I managed to find something acceptable and home I went.

We actually (*gasp*) went to our neighborhood pool. We packed a picnic dinner and walked over for some fun in the sun. The kids could hardly eat they were so excited. After “dinner” we turned them loose on the sprayground.

Ben, my BOY, went at it with great gusto. He delighted in all of the sprinklers and waterfalls and fun. He ran around on the foamy surface, laughing and growling and screaming. He was a sight to behold. Timid Tabby held back and it wasn't until I agreed to run around with her that she would get very close to any actual WATER.

I sincerely regret that I didn't take my camera with us. Ben was especially hilarious, running around soaked, grinning up a storm. I apparently need it surgically implanted on my person (anyone got a good reference?).

Slowly, but surely, we're tackling our summer to-do list. Hard to believe this weekend is the Fourth of July!!

PS My new toy showed up yesterday, but as I was knee-deep in website edits (done on the treadtop? walkstation??), I hardly got to play at all. Hopefully I'll have some show-and-tell soon.

Ben at 1.12

I don’t know if you noticed or not, but I’m doing rather poorly with these monthly or quarterly updates on my kids. See the problem is, I blink and months go by in a whirl of play, work and laundry. Little MAN is well over 13 months old by now, but I haven’t updated in a while, so I will share with you all that is Ben.

Monday I took him to the doctor’s office to have his cold + ear gunk checked out. He had an ear infection and so we got a prescription for amoxycillin and then got to wait around the clinic for like 40 minutes while it was filled. So we were there a long time and Ben drew much attention. Everyone wanted to know how old he was and the answer inevitably drew two comments “boy he’s sure big!” and/or “He’s sure getting around well!” Both are quite true. Mobile is hardly adequate to describe him. He is lightning fast and pretty sure on his feet. He still has the funny toddle/swagger when he walks, but not especially clumsy (for 1.12).

He is quite sizable as well. He is only 25.4 lbs and has hardly gained anything since January, but he has gotten much taller. He’s just a head shorter than Tabby and I always get comments to the effect of “Soon he’ll be carrying you!” when I walk around holding him because compared to my towering height of 5′ nuthin, he’s very tall. I am always amazed how much of his crib he takes up when he stretches out. Continue reading “Ben at 1.12”
