Obsess much?

G'morning all. I'm trying to shake the annoyances the day has already thrown my way. It will be a good day. It will be a good day.

Caring for my small, yet sometimes demanding, bundle of love leaves me with far less time for reading than I used to have. Luckily for me, the pregnancy fairy did not, apparently, take away my speed reading ability from me when she took away my memory, so I can still knock out quite a few pages in scant time. Plus, there's always the elliptical. Anyhoo, though I rarely buy books from Target (or anywhere else, for that matter) before I audition them, I like to look through their selections whenever I'm in so I can get some reading suggestions. Whoever picks their books seems to do a pretty good job. Anyhoo, since aforesaid memory abandoned me, I've had to resort to standing around like a dip with my notepad and writing down titles or stealing Matt's camera phone and taking a photo of the shelves. But the other day, I noticed a sticker on their books that says “Bookmarked.” Come to find out, they have all of their picks, as well as a book club type setup on their website. Very useful. Check it out. Continue reading “Obsess much?”

Are They Joking??

Last night was Sixteen Candles at Film on the Rocks. The movie is always the highlight for me, but before the movie, they usually have a band or two and a comedian to keep everyone amused 'til the sun goes down. Usually these bands are pretty good … the type you might pay a few pesos to see in a club or whatnot.
But last night, we had an experience that I wish I could personally share with all of you, simply because my description of it will not do it justice … not because it was good. Mr. P@cman was the opening act for last night and they were … crap. Apparently, they're a local “bitpop/gamewave” band. Their show was much more than music … it included bikini-clad go-go dancers, outrageous retro futuristic space suits and crustacean costumes. They threw juice boxes at the audience for some reason we never could figure out. In the beginning it was kind of “they're weird, how funny.” But their music just made it loud and annoying. Bad hard rock, with sampled 8-bit video game tunes and some screaming over top of that. And the go-go dancers. They also liked to say “summer.” A lot. We could have had a drinking game.

But they made for really good fodder for us … Continue reading “Are They Joking??”

King of the Road

When Sundance Catalog showed up in my mailbox last week, the image on the cover, of a teardrop trailer captured my imagination. The idea is simple: a small trailer that can be pulled with nearly any vehicle and contains your entire array of camping accoutrements, ready to go. The back opens up to reveal a galley kitchen for meal preparation and the interior contains a mattress and some storage. Of course there's tons of variations on a theme, with canopies and TVs and pull-out tables.

Sundance's version of this American classic, unfortunately is a bit out of my price range … it runs $24,000. But classic teardrop trailers were made to be economical as well as practical. Many of them were built from plans or kits sold by outdoor magazines, and indeed, some people today still build them themselves. I personally think it would be a very fun, if expensive, project.

My Sentiments Exactly

Well it was a fairly typical summer weekend at our household – BUSY. Truly, if you saw my Google calendar, your jaw would probably drop. This weekend contained two pic-a-nics … one for my company and the other, a family reunion for my maternal grandma's family (most of whom live here in CO). We chatted. We ate. We sweated (in the 90s all weekend). We ate. We played games. We ate. You get the idea.

Today was our “day off.” As usual, we went on a hike. This time in Corwina Park. I'd never been there before, but we liked it very much. It was a beautiful hike, devoid of mountain bikers and horses with a babbling brook along the trail that lead to a great outlook. We tried out the backpack which worked great, even for sleeping. Then we completed our “day off” with errands and laundry.

What I'm Up To

My sister recommended we get Lily Allen's CD, “Alright, Still” for my mom for her b'day, so I got to listen to it when I was riding around in her car last week. It is a really fun CD, with interesting poppy melodies and edgy, quirky lyrics. I especially love the song, Alfie, where she's trying to motivate her stoner brother to “get off his lazy arse.”

I know everyone read these books like ages ago, but I have had Da Vinci code sitting on my shelf for over a year (maybe two) and I'm finally getting to read it now … albeit in very small doses before I pass out at bedtime. I'm really enjoying the story a lot. I also just started the audio book of Angels and Demons. Apparently The Solomon Key is coming out in October. I reserved a copy at the library … I'm 274 of 275 holds for the audio book and they're only ordering 4 copies. I have a better chance of getting the Harry Potter book on CD … I'm 276 of 303 holds, but at least they're getting 30 copies of that!! Continue reading “What I'm Up To”

Happy Father's Day

Happy Fathers' Day to all of you wonderful fathers out there. You add a really special and unique dimension to your kids' lives. And of course, an extra special Happy Vati's Tag to my own hubby, Matt, who is an absolutely amazing father, and of course, my own dad who loves me lots and has taught me well.

We were out of town in Vail for a fun weekend with my mom, Kelly, our friends Mike & Holly and their baby, Liam. My dad was out of town fishing, so we haven't gotten a chance to have our celebration yet. sometime this week.

On the River

I had to share this with you all. A gentleman I used to work with, Richard Couillard, a friend of his, Bob, and Baloo the dog are in the midst of a two month journey down the Mississippi river on the BGB (Bob's Geriatric Barge). Richard's wife, Jessie, is getting phone updates from them and posting them to a blog for all of us to enjoy.

They've had quite the journey so far, including a period of two days without contact when Jessie sent the coast guard out looking for them! They're safe and sound – they were just out of cell range. Sounds like they're meeting lots of nice people and having a great time. Read all about it at The Mississippi Dream.

Bon Voyage, Richard, Bob, and Baloo!
